Anybody with Boats: Take, Send or Donate them
Self ^ | 08-30-05 | The Robb7

If anyone out there has a fishing boat (the small kind) or who knows anyone who has an "amphibious" boat (the kind that are used for tourism) I urge you to contact local authorities and find out how you can help.

A list of relief agencies can be found at www.therobb7.blogspot.com.

I saw a bunch washed up all over the place.

Why not use those?

The sentiment is noble, but we shouldn't be contacting local authorities and tying up limited phone lines unless they specifically ask for this.

they are probably no longer seaworthy, but by all means you use what you have. I am landlocked but I know there are several boats sitting in Texas that should be steaming flank to help out instead of sitting idle in dry dock

Did you hear this request somewhere, or are you thinking that's what they need?

Sounds like the British plea during the Battle Of Dunkirk. It worked then.

We're about 5 hours east of New Orleans and have several small and large fishing boats. I've been tempted to ask my husband to head that way and assist, but I have a couple questions. Small vessels have a limited gasoline capacity. I assume he'd have to take cans with him. Is there a possibility one could get gas there to facilitate his return trip home? Are the roads even passable to get there to assist? What area needs assistance the most?

I live in Nebraska now but lived in SE Texas for a while I would assume that diesel boats would be the most useful as the coast guard and USN could refuel if you were pressed into service

The ones that have been tossed in the storm likely have engines that have been fouled by the water. They probably won't even start up.

All ours run on gas and the last thing I'm going to do is tell my husband we need another boat. He's planned an alligator bow hunt for this weekend at the St. John's River; but, if he thought he could be of real assistance, I believe he'd go if I asked.

Obtaining gasoline is only one of the many problems that will cost hundreds of lives. They were warned for a reason. I'm sorry, I hate to see this happen -- but people were given warnings time and time again that this would occur, and they STILL remained there. Decisions bring consequences, and this time they didn't cheat fate.

That's what came to my mind.

Cunningham wasn't a fighting-Admiral... but the guy was a GREAT planner... a hero in a dismal retreat.

Don't argue, just get your boat and go. If they don't need you, they will turn you away. Be aware, however, that the authorities do have the right to commandeer your boat. They will eventually have to pay you for it, but might be a while.

"John Kerry is first in line!!"

I'm sure the "Scaramouche" is on the way! (After all, Ketchupboy WAS in Vietnam and Cambodia and can maneuver those small waterways!)

Are you sending a boat, or just suggesting that everyone else send theirs?

If anyone has a newer boat that's around 25' they want to donate I'd be happy to take it off their hands. Of course you would have to deliver it to me in Arizona as I can't afford the gas to retrieve it. LOL

What about cruise ship dinghys? There are tons of cruise ships down in that area. Not sure a cruise ship could get into and out of NO harbor now, but that would seem a good way to get lots of people out.

From FR member 30 something american:

Well, this is my fist post since the night of the storm.

Power was restored here (in between Baton Rouge and New Orleans)last night.

Four guys from the shop where I work secured an aluminum flat bottomed boat, extra gasoline, etc. a few hours ago to help in the search and rescue efforts because we can't work anyway (power out in much of BR still where we source parts)....

We had heard that there was a meeting place where people like us willing to help were meeting near the NO metro so I placed a call to the Baton Rouge State trooper's station to get instructions.

They were very explicit in both voicing sincere thanks while informing me that they could not allow us to help seach for and save people in need because violence and gunfire have errupted within the city metro by looters.

I also just heard that civilians who rode the strom out there, both NO citizens and tourists were being placed onto the interstate west towards Baton Rouge and being instructed to walk towards Baton Rouge.....

Amazing....

I'm feeling pretty helpless right now....
