Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

It is quite clear to me that the level of the water in Lake Ponchartain and in the city IS level. The reporters reporting that water is still rising I would bet the farm are wrong. If there is water running where it is above sea level, it is probably backed up sewers or something. These reporters just don't have a clue about how to read topo maps (in fact some seem to think the whole town is below sea level (that was repeated ad nauseum during the hurricane, and wrong each time it was said)), or frankly how to reason their way out of a paper bag. And the idea that the lake is more than a few inches higher than sea level is ludicrous too. Its drainage into the Gulf is massive. That is why this plugging up the breach in the levee stuff from helos is inane. I would be shocked if the idea is not dropped. It will be repaired from ships in due course, in tandem with figuring out how to get the pumps working. It will probably take 2-4 weeks maybe, as a wild guess.
The focus on the casinos is what galls me the most. Screw the casinos.
You nailed it. Every State has the responsibility to it's citizens to have a well thought out plan and the Supervisors and employees and volunteers to carry out those plans asap. You do not hold back and wait to see what will happen. President Bush, Gov Barber and Gov Riley did the right thing, Blanco did not. Sometimes it is who you hire to do those most important jobs that can make you a hero or a Schmuck.
I think it's constitutional.
The 101st Airborne was camped out 2 blocks away at the local juniour high and helping in my neighborhood in So Dade after Andrew, I don't remember anyone complaining at all.
You made me laugh
How can looters be aware of what the media is saying if there is no electricity, no television, no radio for them to hear?
I am ashamed of them....and they have shamed us all, in broad daylight, announced to all the world, the Ugly Americans.
Absolutely disgraceful.
You know if this was in another country we would help them out financially. Kind of like the Tsunamis, but I don't expect any country will come to our help. Not that I really want them too. Its just a point that you will never see them even make an offer to help us out. But when it is them then we are called selfish for not helping out. Just my two cents.
Heartbreaking.
I've been flipping between the 3: CNN, FNC and MSNBC. Whenever I catch Jeanne Meserve I stop because her reports are heart-wrenching: she is holding nothing back and isn't prettying the reports up. We NEED to know how bad it is, whether we are from there or not.
I don't know anyone in the area (aside from FReeper friends), but they are all my "family" as Americans.
(no accolades please, that was not my point, my heart is breaking).
That is just how desperate this situation is.
Water is waist deep around the Superdome and still rising.
God Help these people..
LOL, nicely put.
:(
I've heard nothing good from anywhere with "Island" in the name - isn't one whole island a "black hole" with "no word."?
Shep saying the mayor said that the BEST estimate of getting water out is several weeks...
Surely looters can SEE the media
right in their faces w/cameras
rolling. They don't care!
I would be concerned about a riot starting if conditions become unbearable.
Alabama is sending National Guard to Mississippi
Wasn't there a big celeb filled telethon type show for the Tsunami victims?
DB, on CNN the host just said that the mandatory evacuation was ordered Saturday morning...........wasn't it Sunday?
Fox: Sheriff of Jefferson Parish asking for "everyone with a boat to help rescue."
