Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

I know, this is terrible! 9" sounds like a lot to me in terms of water in my house! Are they going to start removing people from the Superdome now (by boat I suppose??) or have they already? Or are they just moving them UP inside the dome?
"How about bringing in some huge army trucks and loading up people in the superdome and driving them out of town? I think the longer they wait, the higher the water is gonna get."
Doubt trucks can get through.
Though I think FEMA is in an "assessment phase" -
Tom Planchet reported it at 11:58 CDT. Not sure if they've implemented the plan yet.
BUMP
Wise indeed. Thanks for pointing me to it, H, and thanks for writing them, r.
These are dirt poor people, as poor as it gets living in the bayou that haven't seen a new pair of shoes in maybe years. This was inevitable.
The system is moving quickly enough to where it won't dump extreme amounts of rain over a large area.
I don't think the Mississippi is going to be a problem. Lake Ponchatrain is flooding the city all by itself.
It's significant to me. The rest of the city and surrounding area is under deeper water. We had heard that "80 percent" was under water. I'm thinking the Quarter might have been the 20.
(what I meant - hard to read on these boards, is I was by no measure downplaying it as "only" 9")... :)

This was taken on Dauphin Island on 8/28, before the worst of it.
They have increased these reports immensely since yesterday.

I will not be surprised if there is a complete media blackout within the next 24 hours."
I know where you're at saying this, but it would be political suicide. America's getting a wake-up call over the next couple days, and we need that to happen.
Besides....the net was built to be nuke proof.
;-)
Some levies have been breached and are leaking water into the city and flooding is occurring where it had not been before. This is a concern because it is limiting access to and out of the city.
Well, as long as they are above the floodwaters, they are probably better off in those hi-rise apartments until the rescue/evac capacity increases. They should still have food, and, while not perfect, a better sanitary situation, more room, a place to lay down, and whatever first aid/medicine they have.
Sorry that ya'll are having to go through this stressful situation and lack of communication, plenty of prayers going out for you and them. Hang in there.
Gotcha -
Let's hope it doesn't rise higher
I know where they got those shoes.
I'm glad onyx is ok. I was thinking of her.
Do you realize that on top of all this, we really have to worry about terrorist attacks at a time like this when our resources are stretched? :(
So they can fill the gap in hours. But when are they going to start?
They'd probably get a lot of grief using helicopters to fill a levee breach when there are people who need to be lifted out, unless the helicopters in question are unsuitable for human transport.
