Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Tropical Storm 12
"Surly it is floating somewhere"
You'd be surly too, if you were adrift in Mobile Bay during a hurricane, and no one had any idea where you were.
As bad as this one was, Gilbert looked more symmetric with higher cloud tops on the satellite shots.
Tornado activity has been reported in four metro Atlanta counties and the whole area is under a tornado watch until 1:AM. Flood watch until tomorrow at 2:PM
Ya, I don't know anything. I'm sure the National Guard was flying you around by helicopter too. Were you aloud out during curfew? I was. I've also lived half my life in South FL.
As a side note: I was struck by lightning while sawing through a fallen tree with a chainsaw the night after the storm. I still have a scar on by right hand.
Andrew did a lot of damage, but there was no massive loss of life cover-up. I was there.
I think some of the relief that Katrina, as horrible as it was, wasn't worse is starting to show at this forum. ;-)
I have little doubt that it will be the most expensive storm on record, but inflation is partially responsible for that. We don't even have a clue as to death toll, although it is far less than many of us thought last night by several magnitudes.
There's no question is was a horrible storm and we've only begun to learn how bad. Yet, I know I'm relieved. It could have been so much worse, and it was a close call. The difference between megadisaster and disaster might boil down to 20 miles and slight adjustment in storm track and intensity.
Did I not read where there are two more forming.?????
Posted something a little earlier from a WGNO reporter. Came in on 12. Didn't see a lot of flooding, but a lot of damaged roofs, downed trees, some on houses. Standing water on the sides of roads. They only got in about a mile off the interstate, but the Days Inn got a lot of roof damage, so much that they could see light. A bowling alley lost one of its walls. A mall parking lot was flooded, but the roads they could get to were not flooded, but they didn't get very far in.
Atlanta is getting pelted with rain and tornados. The City right now is just getting heavy rain. The tornados are popping up in the surrounding counties.

While Lake Ponchatrain did indeed rise up and part of the airport was underwater, I did get to fly home the next day.
It was probably less damaging than this storm.
I have a feeling we're gonna find some really horrific events have unfolded just to the east of New Orleans, and extending all the way to just west of Pensacola.
Was this the event CNN has been broadcasting since early morning? Looked like a barge with a crane / some soft of floating platform that had broken from its mooring and was buffeted against the pier, didn't look like there was much danger of it going further downstream, looked pretty wedged in with the current.
Amazing and I love Brit Hume but major damge done to three states and its over at 5:05 to go for coverage on the nomination.
Re the USS Alabama, they're probably just not looking for it at the moment, since there's nothing they could do with it right now if they located it. When they start seriously looking for it, I'm sure it will turn up quickly.
I am afraid we are looking at a major loss of life.
"There's a hundred thousand Frenchmen in New Orleans
In New Orleans there are Frenchmen everywhere
your house could fall down
Your baby could drown
Wouldn't none of those Frenchmen care"...
(Beginning lyrics to "Kingfish" - R. Newman)
The news at post 271 is not good.
see 275....good thing I'm no weatherchump
In Mobile Bay, it appeared that waters inundated buildings near the historic battleship USS Alabama, a tourist attraction docked on a causeway that crosses the broad bay. It was impossible to confirm the extent of the damage, however, as the reports were sketchy and contained no commentary.
Struck me as odd, too.
