Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

earthen dikes, for the most part
he also said that 3pumping stations are still not working
do these dikes have golpher holes like the ones in Sacramento Delta?
All the people yesterday saying the Superdome plan was a deathtrap may be right. I don't know how they can evacuate 15 thousand people.
No.
Is anyone watching the streaming version of wwl are they reporting this
Thank goodness. Rich Sanchez is off and someone with a brain is now on (I've heard this guy before and he's pretty good). The French Quarter is now flooding. The new talking head says that there will be a statement given about this levee break and the flooding in about an hour or less. Keep tuned in on CNN (if you don't hit the sack).
earth mounds, id say about 80% of the leeves are earth mounds and concrete leeves top off the eartmounds near the lake Front.
It wasn't a deathtrap at the time - and the good news is that the SD is still going to be pretty much above the level of the lake anyway. The field will flood, but that's about it.
Twin Span Bridge? Is this in New Orleans, or is this the causeway across Pontchartrain? I'm not familiar with NO enough to know what bridge is gone, and neither WWLTV nor NOLA.com have anything more than just this up.
Corp statement in one hour, and then he quickly changed the topic again!
This sounds incredible...
thanks
From an earlier report I think it I-10 heading out to slidell no wonder they cant get stuff there
wooooooo! the big mall on Veterans Memorial in Metairie is a frickin' island
iirc, that was relatively high ground, too, compared to Fat City on the west and the commercial districts to the east... let alone the residential areas south of Vets...
wooooo...

I think this is why Baton Rouge has been so quiet gosh Mitch Landrieu was on their not long ago and not a peep well he has that new nice lt gov apt in BR now
I don't know. Pieces of the roof breaking off and now this. I would NOT want to be cooped up with 15 thousand agitated people. Maybe it won't flood, but how do you feed everyone and maintain order in that space for days?
I have no idea.
what do you mena "gopher holes"?
I don't know exactly what the levee looks like. They must have barges, or boats on the lake. CH-47s can haul 10ton. They need to look around at what the have and improvise fast.
