She getting bad storms, but she's not in the worst of it; she's on the west side of the storm, pretty far out.

It's not a dumb question. I don't know the answer, but suspect it depends on how badly water damaged the house is. Streets in some parts of Queens flood when it rains too much and I don't think those houses are always torn down.

Per CNN: rescue efforts are continuing in St. Bernard -- a boat just pulled up that was packed with people .. who were in their attic, on their roofs .. coming with whatever they could carry .. their pets.

A couple of dozen boats are out there rescuing .. God bless them.

Most didn't care, or thought that their luck would continue.

(as evidenced by the pictures on the picture thread.)

Oh good .. when I saw the weather map with the tornado warnings .. it kinda looked like the upper part of MS was going to get some scary weather.

As I understand it, the term 'causualties' usually refers to victims, or injured, or a combined number of injured and dead. Are you talking about the cameraman on CNN? If so, I am pretty sure he was talking about persons needing to be rescued.

Remember yesterday when one of the reports advised people that stay to have pick axes? I wonder how many happened to have them handy. I am afriad the death toll here is going to be way more than we imagine tonight.

I just realized I didn't answer your question very well. The VHP to 123 rule only applies for the difference accounted for by head loss. You are right that the part of the pump head that accounts for the difference in height to be pumped is unaffected.

I think it is unlikely that the pumping to Lake Pontchartrain is going to need much head to account for a large difference in height. I would assume that the designers would would go for the most efficient design for draining rainwater. This means that they would never be pumping higher than a ~10 ft difference in height. I would assume that the largest fraction of the pump head is going to be for head loss.

That has to be 2 boats side by side - no way they would that many people in one boat.
