Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

God bless the rescuers
It took me a few minutes to realize that the windows they were smashing were NOT the basement windows and those people were coming from the attic.
I think Revel is too young...or I'm too old.
;-)
Careful or you'll frighten us both!!!
No, I'm interested in the Sidebar Moderator. At least I have some control there.
Set ablaze? Heard earlier it appeared to be electrical.
Ditto!
Gone?
That's what I thought, too. And the poor young lady was too frightened to swim.
I'd'a been too scared of THE CREAPY STUFF IN THE WATER!!!
No way--but with all the power lines and gas leaks going on--plus debris and God knows what else in the water, they are going to need our prayers! According to Jeanne Meserve--some of the rescuers were not pros--just people with a boat trying to help out their neighbors.
80% of NO underwater
Slidell - all underwater
No one can go back
Gas tanker leaking oil
No power for 6-8 weeks
Trying to rescue people in houses .. with boats
People are shooting guns and flares to get rescued
Hey, who's looking for the love connection?
or is this the Dating Game...
I'll take bachelor #3, please.
You know, I have had this feeling all day that you and I have been having a parallel converstation. :-)
I meant you COULD marry bannie and Revel to each other.
Exactly so, as long as they can hear people needing help, they will keep trying. There will certainly end up being casualties among the rescue crews as they push themselves too far in an effort to save everyone.
Shooting guns to get rescued. I hope they're aiming well.
"Did you see/hear Jeanne Meserve on CNN?"
Do you know if there is a video link for that clip?
The Lake Ponchartrain Causeway that is the longest bridge in the world is a different bridge from the I-10 Bridge at Slidell that apparently has been destroyed.
The internet is filled with info and pics of the causesway, and has virtually no info on the I-10 bridge (Which is much shorter, but much, much more important.)
Are you sure you don't want what in this box?
If Kerry was commanding he would have to take a poll to see whether or not there is majority in agreement for a rescue.
Kerry would also need to carry his video cam just to make sure his heroics was duly noted.
