Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Along those lines, LCACs would be ideal for transporting stuff into the city - especially since most of the roads and bridges are either underwater or just plain *gone*.
TXCN is reporting that local Wal-Marts are donating food, water, and televisions (among other things) to evac shelters, no prompting needed and no questions asked.
I agree.
Saw this earlier - 85 year old grandma is still in the attic - the chick in the boat is very pleasant - came to stay with Grandma during the storm -
It was a very polite smack.
:-)
No, I didn't. I just got home and I'm trying to catch up. I followed the live thread at work today, posted for a few minutes when I came home for dinner, and I'm just now trying to find out what happened.
Whew, that water is just amazing. I am still in shock over how much water there is.
Careful; instead of zotting you, the AM might just marry you two; I think they have that power on this forum.
Southern Yacht Club set ablaze in aftermath
Was that the big white building we saw on fire over on Fox.
Just a shame to watch such a pretty structure go up in flames.
There is a general rule that I learned in nuclear training relating the volumetric flow rate of a centrifugal pump to the pump head and power required to operate it. It was memorized as VHP to 123. The connection is that if you double the volumetric flow rate of the pump, you must increase its head by 4 and its power by 8 (the 123 refers to the exponent behind VHP). This means if a pump that can move 1 gallon a minute takes 100 W of power, to make the same pump move 2 gallons a minute would require 800 W, and to move 8 gallons a minute would require ~50 KW. But we also have to remember that the depth of the water is only perhaps 15 feet a maximum. This will limit the pump output as well (the pump head). Obviously the design of the pumps plays a large factor in how much power they use, but it is obvious that there is a certain size limitation for the pumps. The reason that it is going to take weeks to pump out New Orleans has to do with the fact that these pumps do have a limited capacity and making larger pumps might be unfeasible (due to power limitations).
Many times it is better to install twice as many pumps to double the flow rate while using half the power than if you doubled the flow rate of the existing pumps (either by making them physically larger, raising the voltage, or by increasing the current).
It was just devastating; she was nearly hysterical, in a quite way, and at times, she was crying.
She has seen things today that nobody should ever see.
CNN reported a few minutes ago that some 300 people have been rescued by boats similar to those Jeanne Meserve was talking about. I think the rescues are still going on--even in the dark. God help all those people!
Forgiven
they are saying it was arson?
That's a good thought. LCAC's can move lots of stuff in a hurry. I've seen it happen. I dunno what might be in the area to accomodate. But its a good idea.
CNN gave the authorities the address. The family is in East New Orleans on the roof. Their neighbor is hanging onto a tree.
they have to be going on....you think those cops and FFs are going to leave with people crying?
"Tell me about that bridge.
And are you all still listening to WDSU live?"
Amazing rescue on now. Old lady in attic, family.
Said the bridge was "down" major damage.
Of course, I'm hooking you up with bannie.
