Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

We can't draw any conclusions from the lack of communication, since the roads and communication systems are out (debris and flooded), and if there isn't a ham radio operator, who also has access to working equipment, there is no way to get word out. People have made it through some amazing situations, they are often incredibly hardy.
This next part is not specifically to you, but all of us:
Since so many persons are reading this thread desperate for any sense of how their family back there fared, I think it is a very, very bad idea to speculate on worst case scenarios when we simply don't know. I am NOT going to estimate, but rather just put out what is reported. History tells us strongly that most of the persons reading this and worried will eventually get good news on their relatives, let's not put them through unnecessary torment. Am not at all advocating lying or sugarcoating or burying the truth, but rather refraining from engaging in the other extreme of doomsday speculation.
That reminds me of photos of Camille in '69. Awful.
Did anyone hear that the water is slowly rising in NO? I am not quite sure what I heard. If true, that suggests the levees have a leak.
Heck, I do that in magazine articles at the doctor's, don't you?
Power is back on and I am snug and safe.
Who is Sunny and why did she freepmail me that I am a pervert? Did it have something to do with Laz?
I miss all the good freeper food fights what with the wind and all.
Tag teaming tonight? :-)
(shakes head) A whole new generation of people with the thousand-yard stare...
Tornado's in GA tonight. Watches in effect (warnings as applicable) some sightings this hour: Barrow county GA and counties earlier in the NW part of the state.
Not I! said the pie :o)
All they have done is show us the French Quarter or Steve Harrigan fighting the wind and rain.... nothing with real reporters out doing real reporting... let the drunks in the Quarter be and show us the people who are suffering in this thing! ... so, yes, I'm very disappointed in Fox's coverage of this thing.
can you watch it?
I heard a report about water still rising - unfortunately, didn't catch the location.
A friend thought you'd like this streaming media. Play it now with your RealPlayer:

There's going to be a lot of rotations.
FOX is showing a squabble? Over gas?
no
The mod is going after Mike?
Jeeze. There is no way I can picture anything he could do that would call for that.
Backtracking is so difficult sometimes. Youread back and read back and read back and you can't see what caused what.
It is sort of a wierd version of the theory of causation.
Hooray for electricity! Wow-that was fast. How did the Hershey's Kisses story end?
Who was 5 miles east of NO?
