He said nothing within a 1/4 mile of the coast is there - hotels, casinos, what have you.

As an amateur radio emergency responder I find it strange that the Red Cross will -not- train us in damage assessment's until -after- an event actually occurs and until we report directly to them for assignments.
Even though we meet bi-monthly at their HQ they say we would "forget" the training if briefed -before- an event occurs.
Always struck me as a slick way to ensure we didn't "stray" off and help another group like the Salvation Army or other relief organizations that we also have Letters of Understanding" with.
BTW - If I respond and check in to a State or County Government agency during an "event" I am covered by their insurance if hurt while on volunteer duty.
Never heard anything about insurance at the Red Cross meetings!
FWIW - Thursday August 18 2005. 28 verified tornadoes in Wisconsin. An all time, one day, record for this state......

Boy, I'd sure like to get an accurate report on that. Cantore was on spot!
The most beautiful Southern Living homes are right off the Beach. Totally breathtaking old structures. Very pricey.

The Alabama is fine. The Museum and park were completely flooded and apparently a C-130 on display has been pulld off it's display.
The confusion came from a local TV report here in Montgomery. They were talking to an official in Mobile on the phone and the Official said "We have lost the USS Alabama memorial, it is gone."
Obviously he was talking about the museum and park, but it sounded like the ship was gone and that was reported by me and also by others on other forums.

Harrigan commented that there were buildings missing along the coast. There are roads going in, but they are covered with water. Maybe they will have more information tomorrow.

Do any of you all know any really good local charities in the areas that were hit? I've given to both the Red Cross and Salvation Army, but I would like to give to a local agency as well. Does anyone have any ideas?

The confusion about the USS alabama was then confounded even more when reports came in that a Ship had struck the US 98 bridge across the bay (which is right by the USS Alabama site.
Once it was confirmed that the bridge was struck by an oil rig, everyone began wondering what happened to the ship. When in fact it never moved.

My son is in the WI National Guard. He spent that night in Baraboo with his unit, and they were under tornado warnings during their "sendoff" picnic.
Guess where he is now? Camp Shelby, MS, just south of Hattiesburg.:(

The biggest problem with the roads being covered with water, is that the SAND is also covering them. Big job cleaning it up.
