As an amateur radio emergency responder I find it strange that the Red Cross will -not- train us in damage assessment's until -after- an event actually occurs and until we report directly to them for assignments.

Even though we meet bi-monthly at their HQ they say we would "forget" the training if briefed -before- an event occurs.

Always struck me as a slick way to ensure we didn't "stray" off and help another group like the Salvation Army or other relief organizations that we also have Letters of Understanding" with.

BTW - If I respond and check in to a State or County Government agency during an "event" I am covered by their insurance if hurt while on volunteer duty.

Never heard anything about insurance at the Red Cross meetings!

FWIW - Thursday August 18 2005. 28 verified tornadoes in Wisconsin. An all time, one day, record for this state......

My son is in the WI National Guard. He spent that night in Baraboo with his unit, and they were under tornado warnings during their "sendoff" picnic.

Guess where he is now? Camp Shelby, MS, just south of Hattiesburg.:(

From the frying pan into the fire.

Great dot-connecting post from someone with "inside" information. Kinda speaks for itself about the training restriction. When I lived in Houston I remember seeing a notice on the AstroVillage motel sign about a certain charity (not the Salvation Army) having a conference there, and thinking "You'll not get any more of my money." Way too fancy a place for a "charity" to meet at, using public contributions...
