"Nagin said at least 20 buildings in the city had collapsed and that it might be 48 hours before residents would be allowed back to their homes to assess the damage."

This is the reason so many people stay in the first place.

Where does the government get the idea that they can tell people when and if they may return to their homes?

What happens when people return and the homes have been condemned and entry by the owners is not permitted, even to retrieve their personal property?

I'm sure King George the socialist will arrive on the scene with plenty of our tax dollars ready to be spent on various "aid" programs.

Public safety has always been recognized as a legitimate governmental concern. This is not an ideological question.

I am sure you would support Typhoid Annie's demand for the government to leave her alone and let her go on working as a cook.

I think they are not letting them back because the homes are unstable. The flooding could weaken or crack the foundations, making collapse a real possibility.

Government officials are trying to save lives and, sadly enough, prevent lawsuits.

Don't be such an idiot. If everyone heads back to their homes before the water goes down and debris is cleared out, several things will happen: 1. They're going to be bitten by the snakes (poisonous, mind you) who are taking refuge wherever they can find a dry space; 2. They're going to be injured by submerged debris; 3. The looters will join with the homeowners, and no one will be able to tell who is who. Yes, there WILL be looters.

"King George"? Do you mean President Bush?

Is you purpose on this forum to debate issues, or, just be a silly troll who belives they are being clever?

.

As a nation, I think it is a good thing we are big enough, and wealthy enough to aid our own in times of national disasters.

Is it your belief that we should leave those suffering from the effects of this disaster to fend for themselves?I would be interested in you explaining fully your position.

Well which is it? ARe you pissed off because people you don't know aren't allowed to "return to their homes" or that "King George the socialist" will spend "our tax dollars" on "various aid programs."

Imagine the NERVE of the president showing up with money and aid when hundreds of people may have been killed. You should have spent last year in FL like I did. And btw, nobody stays during the storm because they are afraid they won't be allowed back to their home. They stay because its there home.

I happen to believe you're just here to stir up trouble.

Because they'd rather not add your body to the morgue count. Probably because they think that just because someone may be stupid doesn't mean they deserve to die.

...Where does the government get the idea that they can tell people when and if they may return to their homes? ...

We form governments from among ourselves to provide for the Common Defense.

In cases like this, residents would want police and other Common Defense (read fire, power, etc.) to be able to be back in these areas before letting other citizens because the "other citizens" just might be looters.

It takes time to clear roads of power lines, trees, bodies, etc.

Wow! A heart of stone complete with DU rhetoric on a day when your fellow Americans are dying and losing their homes in a natural disaster. Guess it takes all kinds.

They played that scam in Charleston for Huricane Hugo. it was months before people could get to their homes. That is why one should never leave if staying is not too loony.

WTF???

Aid to disaster victims is a legitimate government responsibility. What is your solution when these people go weeks and months without water, food, and electricity?

I guess you haven't thought it through to realize that many of the levees may not be stable, there is still the risk of a breach or failure. Given that so much of the city is below sea level, and that the lake and river will be high for several days, what if they let everyone back in and then the bowl flooded? No way they all get out without mass drownings.

If it pisses off ideologues such as yourself, then I hope so.

Fortunately for the U.S., you nutcases don't seem to be very popular at election time...or any other time for that matter.

Enjoy your tiny, close-minded, hate-filled little world. The adults, meanwhile, will be busy running the country (something that you'll **never** experience).

Lot of people ignore these requests because they know they can. It is simply the people who are responsible for saving people's lives telling them they will not be able to it they stay.
