Mayor: 200 trapped on Ninth Ward rooftops; bodies floating in Bywater

Mayor Ray Nagin said that 200 people were stranded on rooftops in the Lower Ninth Ward and several “bodies are floating in the water” in the Bywater neighborhood and in Eastover.

Nagin made the announcement in his first press briefing after Hurricane Katrina slammed just east of the city, but did plenty of devastation to New Orleans.

Nagin said that the 200 stranded people included 20 police officers who were riding out the storm at their homes in preparation to take over shifts from other officers. He said that boats would be dispatched on rescue missions later in the afternoon.

Mayor Nagin issued a "boil water" recommendation for water in the city - except for Algiers and the CBD due to a water main line break that may have compromised the water.

Nagin said at least 20 buildings in the city had collapsed and that it might be 48 hours before residents would be allowed back to their homes to assess the damage.

Even someone that stayed that could have left should be helped when they can. People stay for various reasons. Often fear. I try not to judge but just pray for them.

I just heard on FOX that even before the National Guard or Rescue Units could get to them that fishermen, in their sport boats were taking them off of roofs:') Regular American Heros.

I am sure you would support Typhoid Annie's demand for the government to leave her alone and let her go on working as a cook.

I remember it being “Typhoid Mary.”

The majority of Americans are just good people. This country makes me proud!

People make mistakes. In a time of panic and fear we don't all think clearly. Some go numb and paralyze, some go into denial, risk the odds, gamble and sometimes lose; but for crying out loud, their suffering is horrendous and to criticize people during this time is totally heartless. The easiest thing to do is look back. You should be ashamed, and you know who you are.
The people who made the biggest difference in my life are the ones who loved me and helped in spite of my stupid choices. Stop judging and be that.
God help everyone of these people regardless of why or how
they wound up at this place.

It wasn't the lake but a levee.

There saying 20-30 foot storm surge pushed right over the levee, which is at 20-25feet. Either way, it's really bad. I've got a talk about(Beeper) and I'm getting reports of things being really bad off.

The Farbourg Marigny district went under!
Frenchman ST, by the French market along the Miss river

NO Court house has water to the top steps!!
On Tulane & N.Broad

Westbank
Apt complex completely destroyed

Chalmette
Locals are saving people and breaking in banks to use as temp shelters until help arrives!

Slidell
May have been worst hit by this cane. Waiting for some message from friends...

Prayers out!

Would love to know what you find out about Slidell...we lived there for a time about 5 years ago (left there 8/2000). We have friends in Pass Christian MS and my husband was stationed at Stennis Space Center when we lived in the area.

Thanks!

The first bank to open after 5pm. How long do you think it took the managers to get there to host?:')

A lot of people who decide to ride it out have pets they don't want to leave behind. That would just kill me to leave my pets and have to evacuate. I'd probably only do it at the point of a gun. I don't have small children, and it would be well to get them out with you if you can, but how awful if you don't have a decent place to stay. I've watched pictures of people who have had to evacuate, and it would be so hard on me to have to sleep in a building with a lot of other people you don't know and try to keep your kids settled down while you are a nervous wreck. I don't think I could sleep unless I was just toooooo tired, then it would be fitful.

People with means can get their pets out with them and figure out a way to board them somewhere if they have to and can hole up in a hotel or with relatives.

Good reason not to own too many pets. I'm down to one. Anybody could be ordered to evacuate anywhere, any time, for a lot of different reasons even if they don't live in tornado alley or areas that are hurricane prone. Toxic spill on interstate, or rr, hostage situation in neighborhood, unforeseen massive power outages, and terrorism of some kind, of course. Must be other things that can happen, too.

I was visiting a farm a couple weeks ago, and life is so different there from the city, it's unbelievable. It's soooo quiet. My son said he could never live like that. He may one day regret having felt that way. The only real danger they would face there might be a bad storm or tornado. Contaminated wells can be dealt with short term, and unless it's in a flood plain, they are pretty safe from almost anything other than criminals and now some wild animals. Most of them are probably armed.

Little old ladies on walkers might a a bit more trouble. For that matter, so might a lot of much younger city people who have trouble walking a mile. Seriously walking out of that city might be a problem. It seems as though every path has been covered with concrete or asphalt. As in most cities, even bycicles have a hard time competing with auto traffic. What I could not understand was that for some time they did not let the outgoibng cars use both side of the freeway. That would have more than doubled the excavation rate.

I know for a fact they have encroached on land that used to be beaches and moved farther out just like they have in the canyons of CA where there is fire danger. People tend to go farther and farther into areas that shouldn't be developed.

Certain areas should be off limits like how far from the ocean/gulf you can build. Wouldn't hurt tourism but it could sure save tax dollars after a hurricane. I don't believe in building condo's on barrier islands either.
