"I think reports that the city have dodged the worst were premature as the storm there is now at its maximum potential..."
Trust me, NOLA DID dodge a MOAB; the destruction that would have ensued if they were to the east of the eye would have been far greater...that does not mean that NOLA will not see significant damage, just that it could be a whole lot worse
It will be very interesting to see what kind of devastation occurred NE of NOLA...I do not know the area and do not know how populated that region is....anyone have any info?

Somebody mentioned earlier that there may be a secondary line of defense, a levee seperating NE New Orleans from the rest of the city.
Anyone have maps of the levee system or more information on their location?

I do not know the areaThat is clear, because you were somewhat wrong in your assessment. The wind damage would have been worse if this had hit straight on or to the west, but the real danger is the catastrophic overtopping of the levees by wind driven lake storm surge from the north and west filling the bowl to 15-25' deep with floodwaters. So far we don't know if that has/will take place, but the worst case for that, according to the LSU engineer who modelled and predicted this, is the eye passing just to the east of the city. Right now it may or may not be far enough east to avoid that, we just don't know.

"But we survived Russian Roulette this time, so it MUST be safe!"
