Even worse, I cannot imagine how the conditions are in there.

Looks like it's starting now in NO, Shep reporting sustained winds of 70 mph. Roof off one of the buildings nearby.

If they gather everyone in the center and their body heat rises fast enough, they could actually get a little hurricane going inside.

That may some of the recreational activities scheduled for the afternoon. It is going to get boring later in the day.

9,000 confirmed without power and AC in the Superdome. 3,000 without power in the Hyatt, windows now breaking at the hotel.

I agree, WCG. I sent Fox News an email quite a long time back telling them that he was my favorite reporter, because he was direct, cool, and didn't hype or slant a story.

I think it is time to send them another note about his fine reporting, not to mention his calm in the face of danger.

Even if NO escapes the big Bowl effect, the power lines could be down for WEEKS. I wouldn't want to suffer thru that.

Do you all remember Harrigan's reports from Afghanistan with the Northern Alliance at the start of the Iraq war?

He apparently has no fear.

........

Where I come from it's called stupidity. even fighter jet pilots, astronauts and professional race car drivers say if you lack fear YOU WILL get harmed due to carelessness and likely die.

On Intellicast Radar at 6:37 am this morning it appears the eye was passing over the Mississippi River.

Port Sulphur was on the Northwest side, Venice was on the Southeast side.

As someone wisely said yesterday, evacuate you can always go back later. If you stay you have no choice later.

I've collected some screenshots at the album link below. I have a shot from the "Parade Cam" on St. Charles 1 minute before the camera was lost. It's the last in the album right now. I will be adding more pics to this album.

Not to hear some of the whiners here tell it -- who most likely would have been part of the whiners yesterday berating the mayor for not ordering the evacuation sooner.

You're doing some pretty solid whining yourself right about now.

;-)

Don't get me wrong...Steve Harrigan is one of my favs.

I simply don't think he needs to be standing out in this stuff....with flying glass, etc.

Thanks, good idea.

I will do the same.

He brought us the story as it was happening. If men like that don't go out there we would never know the real story.

I grew up in Florida, and I remember going through three or more hurricanes, luckily none of them direct hits on me.

I remember that my Mom was really scared of them, so we would go to a big hotel in downtown St Petersburg to ride them out.

I can remember seeing the plate glass windows in the lobby 'breathing' and stretching from the pressure, and seeing loose objects like metal trash cans, stop signs etc flying by.

Somehow our home escaped major damage each time. Of course the house was made of concrete and (real) stucco, with a heavy tile roof.

May God protect those people in NO and nearby regions who are unable to leave or are simply unaware of the magnitude of this thing. And thanks for the great threads!
