Actually, I think the thing that would creep me out is fire ants. They make a little ball out of their colony, and it FLOATS! Then, as soon as they touch dry land, they swarm upon it. I would hate to be someone hanging onto a telephone pole or something, and a colony of fire ants happens upon it. Ugh.

I just got a call from a resident of Slidell who evacuated but got a call from some one in the city government there before the communication went down. So this is third hand hearsay, the description he received was "total devastation". Since then I haven't heard of anyone either establishing contact or receiving news. I am very anxious.

"WDSU still asking for Slidell residents to call in.

Worrisome.... none of the 30K residents has called yet?"

Hopefully, that's because both land and cellular phone lines are out of service in the area. I would think that cellular phone towers make inviting targets for hurricanes.

"I mean, I guess we'd expect it to be evacuated but wouldn't SOMEBODY with a cell phone have ridden it out?"

Maybe they have bigger worries than talking to idiotic reporters. Also considering electricity is out, no one can hear the appeals for people call in. Personally I would be saving my batteries to dial 911 if necessary.

Re Slidell:

I'd believe it. The folks here from that city said they expect "nothing will be left" when they arrived.

The eyewall went over Slidell. It could be really, really bad.

There weren't any houses on the island after that hurricane. They started over.

Not true. Plenty of the old victorians and even some antebellum houses survived, and you can tour many of them every year at the GHF Historic Home Tour (excuse the plug) Palladin I think said that they let the first floors of masonry bldgs become basements under the fill, but in fact they were jacked up too (Ashton Villa, Bishops Palace plus scores of others, including big old honkin' churches). Really an amazing feat.
