Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

"Corruption ruled the day."

As it unfortunately still does. How on earth do you start to separate corruption from Louisiana politics? My guess is when enough people wake up and vote all crooks out of office. A "good guy" here or there is only scratching the surface.

So can you tell if this event is worth covering or is it a lot of hype? I have no way to gauge. Do we just have to wait to see the aftermath? The media is getting on my nerves. Will this be a test to see if we've more or less 'beaten' hurricanes in terms of modern building and survivability?

thank you very much for the updated map!

As far as the land masses...all that stuff on the map below New Orleans isn't really land--it's swamp.

Bouy 42040

This buoy has stopped reporting wave height. Last report that it did have that was just under 40 foot waves.

This buoy is in deep water.

Weather Channel has storm surge figures, and I hope they are wrong. I have seen those levees -- but they are saying 20 to 25 feet for the storm surge.

Storm seems to be heading a little to the East of New Orleans. But it may not be far enough East.

Agree with your accountability analysis."

I'm sure there was a post about Nagin supporting Bush (true or not). Maybe THAT poster was mistaken. Where on earth that post is now, I have no idea. Thanks for starting all of these threads. They are a great resource!

ummm...you used "modern building" in reference to New Orleans. That's a stretch.

Estimated 80% of buildings in the city will be uninhabitable.
