Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

LOL

I figured if you went that far that it would just be an IV drip.

Settle down, Frances.

Though I totally agree with your sentiment, lets try to keep our movie references accurate.

"Lighten up Frances." Bill Murray, Stripes.

"And if I catch any of you guys touchin' my stuff...?...I'll kill ya'."

She continues to weaken. Not much but some. Keep hope alive. She is still extremely dangerous.

I would imagine that parts of New Orleans have already gotten 5-10 inches, but haven't seen any real totals yet.

THanks. Yeah, any chem spills would be a disaster. I would think most of those companies are more conscienicous than the mayor and gov though and would have done a better prep job.

"Something that many people don't think about is that the recipes, jokes, and other off-topic subjects keep the thread bumped to the top so more people will see it. This is true of any "disaster" thread, especially breaking news ones. The lighter comments don't reflect poorly on those posting them ... they serve several very useful purposes."

Not only that, but it's the middle of the night, and nothing is really happening yet. If you're up this late reading FR, you should expect to see silly stuff, even in the face of danger and destruction.

I think the post said Nagin had supported the Pubbie candidate who ran for Governor agaist Blanco.

Agree with your accountability analysis.

Thanks. The LSU students are doing the best they can, I'm sure.

"I can't help you confirm that. However, I do remember that Nagin backed Bobby Jindal and not Blanco for Gov. He caught a lot of flack for that."

Thanks for the info. I believe Nagin started out with good intentions. He just ran up against a political machine that was more interested in feathering its own nest, rather than actually doing anything to solve the crime and schools problem. Corruption ruled the day.

Choice.

How much choice did these citizens have? It is one thing to be "told", to be "informed", and quite another to be left out of the loop. It's an even greater travesty to have been ill-informed, uninformed, and stranded.

Unreal. They're demanding that Bush tour the aftermath? Like he wouldn't automatically be there? Will Cindy be far behind?
