Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

Yes it is.

I'm in Vero Beach. Caught the NE Eyewall of both Frances and Jeanne. Lost my home along with many others.

The storm-Nazis hassled everyone trying to get back to the point it was ridiculous. I left fro Frances, but becauser of the jack-ass authorities keeping people from coming back, I stayed put for round two. This is what most I know did here.

And what Jeff said is EXACTLY what I hear from everyone here.

LOL! You've never been in a hurricane, have you?

Actually I have and also a few tornadoes. Put 50,000 people in an exposed field exposed to hurricane force winds and most won't make it.

These people have no idea what is about to hit them. This is going to be total destruction in dozens of small towns. Damage will be unreal.

People are still not believing it is going to be "that" bad.

There was a thread here on FR last year where a guy in Florida was tasered because he wanted to get to his house.

One anecdotal thread does not support your sweeping statement , "They have been evacuated so many times and had such a hard time getting back that they don't even leave anymore."

If you followed the earlier threads here, several of us from Florida have related evacuation stories that went like clockwork.

Yeah, you are correct and made a good analogy. However, having just gone through two acclerated physics classes this summer, I just couldn't let that little detail pass. :)

I'm glad you called my on my lazy-ass lesson ;). I drill my kids on the definitions of force, work and power -- funny to get caught.

"Oh! Isn't her "train" suppose to start in New Orleans?"

She'll have to change her mode of transportation to a canoe, or more likely a submarine. Preferably in a sub as it keeps her ugly mug out of sight.

Nonsense. The damage from increasing winds in exponential. There is absolutely no way a storm is as deadly 80 miles inland as down on the coast, the winds just don't sustain that far inland. Were this hurricane to run the most direct route to BR, the damage would pale in comparison to what NO is going to get. But again, massive deaths in hurricanes come from drowning, not winds. Take it up with the NHC and the history books.
