Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.
Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

If I were anyone staying in N.O. I would want my water wings and scuba gear, and anti-venom.

Bobby Jindal would have reacted like a true leader and there would have been a contingency plan implemented immediately. Blanko is so way over her head it isn't funny. She should be ran out of office after this. I made sure to remind my stupid lib sister of that too.
I would completely believe it...
it's been stated on this thread, but some think it could go as high as $90 tomorrow.
I think that's a bit conservative, but I am certain it isn't permanent.
I think the Katrina's eye will move west of New Orleans and the city will LIVE. I hope Shep's sat-phone works all night.
Hey Fox Reporters, the waves were to choppy and flat to surf. If people what to check out the waves, let them. The Wright Brother's would have never flown if the media was their.
I don't like the struts that hold up the parapet walls (walls sticking up above the roofline). If those parapets break loose they will peel the skin of the roof back like an onion. Once (If) that happens the rest will come off pretty quick. Maybe not the underlying structure holding up the roof, but the wind and the rain will be able to get in.
There's going to be some funky things happening in the windflow in that area, you'd need a supercomp to model it properly.
A basement in NOLA!
They have to choose someplace.
Could make landfall as a Cat 4 - seems to be weakening and the eyewall is warming. It'll still be hugely damaging, but perhaps not the Doomsday thats being thrown around.
They will die by the thousands. Left in back yards chained to a stake. Left in clapboard houses that will be totally destroyed. Allowed to run free and we'll see many of them swimming around from the helicopter shots tomorrow with the snakes.
thank you
The mayor of NO said yesterday that it can withstand 200 mph winds.
US Crude Oil futures have surged more than 4 dollars in opening trade.
New record..high above $70 a barrel.
We aren't talking about an airplane wing here. Are you saying that a roof would stay on better if the windows and doors were left open during a 150mph wind? I HAVE framed over 150 homes in 18 years and I know what UPLIFT is and the required straps needed to meet codes. There is a reason we don't put four and five foot overhangs on houses anymore and that is because of UPLIFT.
Ah, chiggers. We always either covered them with clear nail polish (or model airplane dope) or soaked in a warm tub with a box of baking soda poured in then made it a point to liberally apply DEET-containing repellent afterwards.
It worked for us. Its why we had a five pound pail of baking soda in the bathroom so you could scoop out a couple of scoops into the bath water every couple of days because a few will always get through no matter what you do. It'll kill them if you soak long enough.
Well said.
That's true, some people won't leave their pets. I think I'd probably be one of them, but I'm not in an evac zone.
If I evacuated, I'd take the dogs with us, and just leave town.
But in our city we finally have a pet friendly shelter. You can bring your animal as long as you bring a kennel/transport cage for them.
Pets are very resiliant. If there is a way for them to survive, they will. Remember the cat they found on the roof of an abandoned building six weeks after the World Trade Towers went down. The owners couldn't get back to their apartment and figured the cat was gone. It had lived on rain water and...?
The analogy is Accuweather's, and their purpose was to impress upon people who might otherwise be taking this storm too casually that they should think of it as a multi-mile wide tornado and heed the warnings ASAP.
