Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

having different viewpoints and discussing them is what makes FR so refreshing

I agree! And to all: I understand tensions are high but reporting every person on the thread who says something controversial isn't helping. When I see comments I don't agree with, I keep going. It's very easy. There is a whole heck of a lot going on right now - and a lot of people in harm's way. And when this kind of thing happens - you have even MORE viewpoints about the how/why, etc. We need to keep our heads. (or so I keep being told when I panic about feeling helpless).

As my husband just said to me: "I feel like I'm watching people boarding the Titanic."

I'll keep praying.

Info. on the Superdome being used as a shelter.

The Superdome is built to withstand catastrophes; the roof is built to stand up to 200 MPH wind and even deep flood water wouldn't reach the second level 35 feet from the ground. It has thus been used as an emergency shelter but is not designed for the task; in 1998 during Hurricane Georges problems included looting and supplying 14,000 people with necessities.

The whacko I was referring to was the blue line, which was pointed to Gulfport -- sorry I wasn't clear (I completely discount the XTRP).

The last NO radar loop I looked at (up to 9:25 PM CDT) has the eye heading straight at New Orleans.

I use a skillet. I brown onion and bell pepper in butter along with kielbasa. Cook the beans seperate until soft and then add spices and veggies. Then I make a roux and add to the whole thing. In the south we use iron skillets for everything.

I am familiar with Richter Magnitude Scale - but never heard that mathematics applied to Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.

It is a city known for Voodoo, partying in the French Quarter/Bourbon Street (and Fat City), as well as strip joints...

It's also a city of good Catholics and Christians, families, and children that don't deserve that attitude. I'm in the middle of the Bible Belt, with a Southern Baptist church on every corner, yet we still have strip joints, bars and partying. I don't see God's wrath turning towards Tennessee.

According to the weather guy on WWL, recreation of the eye would strengthen the storm rather than weaken it, as the band that would replace the eye is much stronger...

At least that's what I understood him to say...

"This will be one of the worst disasters ever for the US. It is almost incomprehensible now but in 24 hours we might know all too well how bad it was, certainly in 48 hours."

Unfortunately, you are correct.

if you have no religious belief , why would it bother you if someone else did ?

I have a real problem with you people damning other people.

And I don't think I'm alone.

Can't you just keep your pontificating to yourself, or do you need to do it in public to feel like you're a big man?

Yup, you and I are hanging out in the same area tonight. I've been all OVER that page!

My dad uses the weather bouys before going out on Lake Superior with his buddies in their 35 foot boat. They check 4 or 5 bouys and get an idea which way the wind is blowing, and plan accordingly. Their main concern is, however, where the fish are likely to be feeding heavily. The wind blows stuff off of ships crossing the Lake, and the fish come up and gobble the corn and wheat. Proven by cutting open their bellies and finding corn, not even wet yet, still dry and hard.

Interesting. < yawn >

So, if this is some divine punishment meted out for the sinful behavior on Bourbon Street, it's kind of going to kill and ruin a lot of people who have absolutely nothing to do with those goings-on.

I think this is the same clown who thought last year's Florida hurricanes were God throwing meteorological bowling balls at Judge Greer.

That would explain it. The eye is still well-defined and it still has a annular shape. A 20mph drop in wind strength would be a little good news. But it doesn't look like that's what happened. Probably a KTS to MPH conversion thing like you said.

My sister, in the path of the storm, lives on a farm and just called me. She was furious at her hubby. She has a pet llama whose companion is a goat. She loves them. Their barn is old and unsafe for a storm.

She wants to let the llama and goat come in her big gorgeous house to spend the night. Her husband says no.

I am laughing in spite of myself. I told her to take them to a hotel in Memphis. The llama is a sweetie and he doesn't mind riding in the car.
