I'm still here.

St. Tammany is under duress. The power supply is shot and phone networks are jammed. Anyone still around please try and help out by not wasting fuel.

I have a brother in Ponchatoula, LA - near New Orleans. Haven't heard from him or his wife since before Katrina hit. I suspect they didn't evacuate, or they'd have checked in by now. I'd appreciate hearing any news about the Ponchatoula area from freepers in the area. Can't seem to find anything on the web about how their community fared. Our mother and my siblings are very concerned.
Thanks.

I live in Slidell, La. Evacuated to Tennessee. Just heard today that my neighborhood is in tact. There may be a tree or two in my house, but at least it's not in 10' of water.

Don't know when I'll be able to return, but my prayers go out to all who are impacted by this storm.

Just got power back early this morning. Some hot nights. Still no cable modem but signed for a dial-up service to use as emergency back-up --very primitive by comparison.

No real damage to home or property outside of tree branches. We were very lucky here in Baton Rouge. A few more miles to the west and this storm would have done us severe damage. The worst part was being out of communication for several days: no phones, no power, and of course, no internet.

I hope all area Freepers fared OK.

We're still not hearing from everyone. I just updated the map with those we've heard from or those who have posted on FR since the storm.

The FReepers with red icons and amber text are those who were in the path of the storm and from whom we've heard nothing since the storm.

I've pinged them several times and sent FReepmail. Nothing.

The list is:

Liberty2004
GulfCoast6
FatRat's son
JRushing
LibLieSlayer
MozartLover's Son
Luke
Pelican 5
MozartLover's Son
Princess Leah's Daughter

If anyone has any word on the status of these FReepers or their family members, post something here.

I have not personally heard from my son but I did just get this from the Family Support Group Coordinator for his unit:

News From Camp Shelby

"Just a little update from Camp Shelby. All of the guys are doing great. Charlie Company is "setting the standard" for the battalion. The unit spent the last 2 days getting the base organized. They helped move trees that were blown over and clean up debris. They are not allowed off the base.

" Camp Shelby still has no power and the phone lines are still down. Some of the buildings are being powered by generators during limited times during the day. The fuel is very limited as well so they have to hike to their training areas. The unit will resume training today.

"Camp Shelby is also being used as a hurricane disaster shelter for the state, FEMA, and the Red Cross.

"Do not be concerned if you do not hear from your soldier for a while. The phone lines are down and they do not know when they will be back up. Even soldiers with cell phones may not get to call. Due to the overwhelming use of cell phones in the state, it is very hard to call out. Also, soldiers have almost no way to charge their phones up.

" Please be patient during this difficult time. Your soldiers are being well taken care of and will continue with their training. Please keep everyone affected by this disaster in your prayers.

GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS!!"

So I guess he is officially "accounted for". Not going to rest easy until I hear his voice, though.:)

Okay, you can count my son as officially "okay".

He just called his girlfriend & although the cell connection kept cutting in & out she was able to tell that he's doing just fine.:)

"Ping-a-ling! (in case you haven't seen this one..)"

Thanks. Me and all of mine are doing fine, our biggest inconvenience is no AC due to no electricity. I discovered to late that the generators will not power the portable AC units. Cooking outside is like a camping trip.

My boyfriend is stationed in Camp Shelby right now and I heard from him yesterday. He said he is doing fine. He said there is only one pay phone working and about 100 guys in line to use it at all times. It was a short conversation, but nice to hear he's ok. What unit is your son in?
