MORE GREAT NEWS!!!!!!> Just got word from family. They are safe. House got about 6 foot of water, stayed in attic till water receeded. Walked to friends house that has a bit more elevation, it wasn't flooded. They were able to drive to Mobile and get supplies and word to family that they were OK!!!> Other family member in CA, was contacted, he flew to Texas, rented a 4x4, bought 2 generators and lots of food, water and all the gas he could haul and drove back into Diamondhead to them. They are hoping to have phone service soon, but will be going back to Mobile on Sunday to call all family and check in.> Thank you GOD. Weight of the world is off my shoulders!! Thank to all for prayers and thoughts. May everyone find theier familes safe and well also!!!!!!!!!!!

Just checking in. Finally got my cable restored today and got back on line. We lost power for about two days, and had some limbs down in our yard, but other than that we are fine, Thank God!

Our neighbors (who have a 4 bedroom home and no children) have taken in a young family of four from St. Bernard Parish and an older gentleman with MD from Metairie.

I'm about to take a few hours and read the Katrina Live threads.

Thanks to all for prayers!

Folsom had some strong wind damage. Haven't heard of any fatalities from there as of yet. I think the entire Northshore got lucky in terms of loss of life.

If the phone isn't getting through then pay it no mind. The circuits are still being jammed and we're trying to get service restored. We had every phone from the foot of Lee Rd to the parish line powered up till tree trimmers put them back down again.

I'm here! We have many trees down, no power, no land phone or cell phone. It's 95 degrees hot. Lost a few shingles on the house & a pine on the storage shed. I'm at work where we now have power & phones.
Covington, La. was hit hard with many trees, power poles & phones lines down.
Some flooding. It'll be weeks+ coming back.
Gotta go.

Thanks for your prayers.

Thank you so much for your kind reply.
I am happy to report that about an hour ago, I received word on my relatives. They are alive and not injured, probably wiped out financially, but alive, Thank God.

And, thank you.

Has anybody heard from cerberus? Last post was #1444 in Live Thread III: "I am in Slidell...about 11 feet above sea level. Unless there's a significant change by the 5 a.m. report, we'll be getting out of here."

More good news - FatRat finally checks in:

spiff, thanks for your concern. i could not get any word from my son or others in Picayune so i started hurrying back from my vacation in calif on tuesday of last week. i arrived in picayune on friday. my son is ok except for a severe case of poison ivy from wrestling trees off his home. my neighborhood looks like a warzone with trees all over homes and powerlines all over the streets. but my home was spared except for some shingles blown off. i do have some pretty substantial damage to my barn.

i got phone service back yesterday but the circuits are so busy that it is almost like having none. my dsl broadband is working however. don't know when we will get power back, looks like a huge job to restore it. shortages of everything here, especially gasoline and no diesel at all. walmart re-opened partially yesterday and said they expect to have fresh milk today and probably a load of cold-cuts tommorrow. we are getting plenty of ice and water but not nearly enough meals have been brought in. the line starts to form for them at daybreak (curfew is dusk to dawn) and if you don't get there real early, you miss out. we were lucky. i have a refrigerator in the motorhome and i stocked it well before i left texas.

We heard from my brother in Mobile, and they're all OK. He lives close to Mobile Bay, and we were afraid the 22 foot storm surge buried them under water. They had some flooding and some wind damage, but were up high enough that they didn't take the brunt of it.Their main problem was no power and phone service during the days after.

He had gone to New Orleans to get my (8 months pregnant) niece and her family the night before it hit, and then there was no word for 4 days. My niece and her family are OK, and she has settled down so she has not delivered yet. I think I would have. LOL She's been very upset because they think their house in New Orleans is under water, and because she won't have her doctor when she delivers. They will stay in Mobile with my brother, and she has now accepted having the baby in Mobile. When they are allowed back in, my brother and her husband will go into New Orleans to see what's left, if anything.

Some FReepers we have not heard from since prior to Hurricane Katrina's landfall. Some of them indicated their plans to evacuate. Prayers for their safety and Godspeed to them all. Looking forward to hearing from them soon:

My husband and I have made it safetly to my sister's house in Iowa. We live in the warehouse district downtown and things look ok. My cats are still in the apartment only because we were out of town for teh rally in Crawford last week and we left before the warning. I am terrified for my cats and I NEVER would have left tyem if I had known. When we left for Crawford, the news was saying that Katrina was going to hit the Florida panhandle! My husband isn't getting paid and I have no idea what will happen to his job. I am ranting and venting....but, we are safe. I am just terrified that my cats won't be ok.

Well, Grenada, this is the place to rant.

I'm glad you're safe, but I wish there was something I could do about your cats. :-(

I'm sure you're entitled to some aid from FEMA. Have you looked into that?

Yes, we have checked in at the Red Cross/Fema and have recieved a little(I mean little) money. We have also contacted the Humane Society and they took our info and told us they would get to our cats as soon as it is safe. I can't have any children so my cats ARE the closest thing I've got. I know I should just be grateful that my husband and I were out and alive, and I am grateful. I love my cats, its really that simple, I love them. I want them with me.

Thanks for the concern. I'm OK. Better than OK really, given the circumstances. My apartment building on the beach in Long Beach survived, by the grace of God. Scroll to the center of this huge image and you'll find my building circled in red.

I was able to salvage everything except the mattress, box springs, and a bookcase that needed to be thrown out anyway. The apartment did have some minor water damage, as rainwater leaked through the places where the shingles were blown off. There was some mold, too, after 2 weeks of being couped up with no A/C. I'm still in the process of cleaning everything, so we'll see if the mold infiltrated my stuff or not. So far, most of it looks good.

A small piece of the ceiling fell down onto my TV and VCR and there were some water spots on the tops of both, but they fired right up on the first try!

I bugged out to Memphis initially with friends, before heading to my parents' houses in NC for a couple weeks after realizing it'd be a while before I could return. It is a mess down here, to say the least. Driving down a path cleared through a 15 ft. pile of rubble is not anything I ever want to do again.
