Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

this is the very same mayor who didn't think he had the power to order an evacuation.

Point taken.

How's that? That people will return to their homes after a disaster depite the danger of it recurring? It wasn't intended as a comment on intelligence, but more on perseverance. Perhaps you should check your perspective before calling someone ignorant and irresponsible.

I have also read that it was not specifically designed for that purpose.

People should be aware that while a large substantial structure with upper floors elevated and designed for high winds is a good choice for mass sheltering of people, the actual impact of a storm such as this is not an event that ANY building is designed to withstand with certainty.

No engineering for wind pressure can take into account the wind carried large debris, the battering of wind gusts and the impact of weak-points created by those items.

Only one parapet cap, edge of a roof, damaged vent or area impacted by a flying refrigerator is needed for any structure to have a point of local failure and thus a weak point where the winds attack the entire structure.

Knowing codes, building construction and the like, I have a pretty clear understanding of the limitations of that phrase, "designed-for". If this developes as the last six hours have led us to believe, this will probably be a disaster of a size that most don't contemplate currently.

My husband and I were discussing the river. Hoping someone with more knowledge can help me understand it all...
My understanding is that the Mississippi has been trying to shift to the west for years and has been contained in its current channel by pumping and the like. Question I have is if this nightmare happens and NOLA floods, will the river shift west? If it does, what happens to that area of LA?

NO is one of the best places on earth. After the first three or four visits, and you get OUT of the French Quarter, it is one of coolest places around. The people are nice and the sights are certainly different than what you get in the Northeast.

While the town could use a good bath, this is a tab bit too much.

Good luck to you there. Get out and stay save.

We'll come back.

Even at this point, I think not many people understand how devastating this storm is going to be. There have been so many hurricanes lately that there is a tendency to go "oh, really?" when confronted with a new storm.

But because of oil prices and insurance rates, this storm is going to affect everyone in America and, really, the world.

From a USA Today article FAQ: Attempts to weaken, destroy hurricanes

A bomb or bombs would be a dead end since the amount of energy a hurricane is releasing and the size of its circulation would make any bomb, including the largest nuclear bomb, seem more futile than trying to stop a charging elephant by throwing a ping-pong ball at it. As noted above, hurricanes release tremendous amounts of heat energy. In fact, since hurricanes are "heat engines" that depend on the temperature contrast between warmth at the ocean surface and cold air aloft, we could wonder whether the heat from any kind of bomb would actually add to the storm's natural heat supply, making the storm stronger. Trying to heat the upper atmosphere with bombs, to lessen the heat contrast, would be like trying to heat the city of Minneapolis in January by opening the windows of a house.
