Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

If you want to read a book about the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, read this one:

Very interesting. A category 5 f**k-up by the US govt too.

Please pray for my wife, she's at Keessler AFB in Biloxi Miss. and she is hunkering down at the hospital. I'm at Charleston AFB and cannot be with her.

Yup. And I don't see how the Mobile Bay I-10 bridge can stand up to 20' tides. You could see it go just like the Escambia Bay bridge did last year.

I like Shep a lot. But I think it gives people a false sense of security by showing up at this point.

Gas is $2.69/gallon here in the land of cheese and beer, and I just topped off. If I'm healthy enough to make it to mini-Bristol (Slinger; I've got a nice late-summer cold), I'll top off again on the way home.

Fox news is contemplating if President Bush will release oil from the national reserve.

Even that could be a problem for awhile.

"The government chose to put the oil near the Gulf of Mexico because there are many oil refineries nearby and because shipping is readily available. The sites are Bryan Mound near Freeport, Texas; Big Hill near Winnie, Texas; West Hackberry near Lake Charles, La.; and Bayou Choctaw near Baton Rouge, La."

Great explanation, thanks. What does ERC mean?

On that weather junkie site, here, there was a thread that Katrina was batting back like a handball, a storm system in Texas, that wanted to move east, but Katrina just said no.

I'm still listening to the WDSU-TV Internet feed. It is chilling to hear newscasters in N.O. say things like "we'll hold out here as long as we can."
