Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

----Man, this lady on CH6 telling people 180mph ground winds are coming for their houses...----

That's a 5 if I'm not mistaken.

And buildings will channel it to higher winds, for awhile.

Most parts of Houston are roughly about 50 feet above sea level (Houston Heights being the highest part of Houston).

Houston is helped slightly by the fact that it's about 40-50 miles away from the coast (which usually takes 30-40 mph off of a hurricane's bite, having gone through Alicia (1983) I can attest to that), though the flatness of the terrain often causes flooding problems (Allison 2001).

I wonder if they've revised the sea level for Houston since I was in school several decades ago. Back then they taught us Houston was 6-10 feet below sea level.

I moved from Houston in '81 so missed Alicia. I was 9 when Carla came through and even though Houston didn't bare the brunt, I remember the high winds and rain. We lived off of San Felipe, Voss and Woodway in SW part of town. The last lot on our street was under construction and all of the neighbors took pictures of the unsecured lumber left by the construction people in case claims needed to be filed. Thankfully the lumber didn't cause any problems and we only lost a tree in the front yard.

It is okay if you do not see it! I was just wondering if you did! My husband did not see it in the other picture but the kids and some other people did!

they seem to be back tracking on the mandatory evac on TWC.

now saying the mayor may order it in the morning,

perhaps these are segments recorded before the evac order was given?

has it been confirmed by any other source than TWC?

From what I read, they have a staggered evacuation now.....low lying areas today, then NO, then outer areas....

the last time everyone left at once and jammed the highways...

someone probably called TWC and told them to pipe down

I see something that could look like a rams face or a horses eye.
But, what I was talking about is a outer band or circle around the hurricane
Imagine the hurricane as the hub of a wheel, then ? look at the state of ( Maryland and Pennsylvania ( north part of the circle ).
Then ? ( look east passed the Bahamas ( east part of the circle ).
Then ? ( look south passed the Yucatan peninsula ( south part of the circle ).
Then, look west ( the west coast of Mexico, and Texas, and then, through OKL ( west part of the circle ).
Don't you see some kind of band around the hurricane ?
I have never seen this before.
