Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

I'd agree with the cargo plane idea. The more people that we can get out of that deathtrap of a city, the better.

Have those lawyers consulting with the mayor of NO to tackle this injustice after they've racked up sufficient billable hours with him! ;^)

Pray for the people of New Orleans.

My friend in Pensacola has a neighbor with the EPA local office. A 10 gallon container of DDT was found washed up after one of the hurricanes last year. Must have been in someone's garage or something. Never know what lurks in the water.

Good link. Compared with the quality of today's images, that old satellite photo looks like a cave painting, but Camille still looked pretty darn nasty!

I was on the White Oak River in NC during Hurricane Bertha. Long story short, I stayed cause my grandparents were idiots and wouldn't leave. You CANNOT stop water, and it is very destructive. The wind is horrific too. I saw a 100 yard pier lifted up by the wind, and then destroy several others. The storm surge is faster then a blink of an eye, and the storm strikes quick, and once it starts you might as well forget about evacuating.

As I understand it, the just east scenario is the worst, because the west side of the eye blowing south then drives the lake south right over the levees into the bowl. That seems to be right about the most likely path of the storm. Hopefully the top the bell curve will not pan out.

It shows my lack of NO and LA geography. I didn't realise there were so many factors involved in a NO flood secnario.

"I remember someone stating in the Ivan thread (last year)about mandatory evacuations. If the city officials call for them, they are financially libel for everyone that cannot afford to evacuate. Any Louisiana FReepers remember this??"

The governor of Alabama ordered a mandatory evacuation of Mobile and Baldwin counties just before hurricane Dennis. Most ignored it.

Well if he knows that, he should help them!!
Doesn't he have a picture of a tsunami he can point to (from his monitor or the studio) and show them?? They'll get it.

The mayor is playing politics.
If the hurricane passes over, he'll get blamed for everyone leaving and the loss of money.
He's thinking about his career.

I think it was that it's the first time ever that the President had never declared a state of emergency for a state PRE-storm ... did I hear that wrong?

Yeah, you've got at least three problems other than the altitude, maybe four, in NO: (1) Lake Ponch; (2) the possibility of the Mississippi River being pushed backwards, with heavy flooding at the points where the stoppage occurs; (3) the rainfall of a sllloooww moving storm; and (4) maybe a storm surge, then they're actually reasonably inland, excepting the River.

That sports arena will be the "shelter of last resort" for those who "rely upon public transportation." (The mayor said that on the weather channel.)

Looks like more vandalism.

Don't put it past the left to blame this 9/11 size disaster (times five?) on Bush. Global warming, not providing troops, cargo planes. We could be looking at Bangladesh, Louisiana if a big Cat 5.

Max Mayfield thinks there will be a 20 foot storm surge. The levees are about 10 feet with settling. The mayor says the ONLY thing stopping him from a deer in the headlights strategy is his city attorney is busy doing research about whether what the power he has to do anything. I just heard this oldie but goodie once again.

(2) the possibility of the Mississippi River being pushed backwards, with heavy flooding at the points where the stoppage occurs

What effect would that have, on people as far up as Baton Rouge?

"After looking at your graphic...is it self-righteous for me to ask why anyone lives there?"

Not if it's not self-righteous of me to ask why anyone would live in a state like California, portions of which will fall into the Pacific one day and are subject to severe earthquakes on a regular basis.

Boss called me and asked me to come in tomorrow and move my truck to higher ground. Kinda chuckled and told him that there's no way I'm going into the city tomorow. Apparently no one else has a key for my vehicle.

You made a wise decision. It's only a truck. Stay safe.
