Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

Sheriff calling for his deputies to report for duty and BRING THEIR BOATS.
Very poor audio quality from Crawford for Bush's remarks.
I'm watching the same conference on WWL with the Jefferson Parish EOC folks...
bye bye roof...with 40,000 people inside..
I'm beginning to feel sick.
I hope that the widespread loss of life that I dread doesn't happen, but it's beginning to look like it might be inevitable.
I, too, am very sad about all this. I am worried about quite a few folks in the NO area whom I taught for several weeks this past spring and summer and spent about 7 days with them at UCLA. They teach in the NO area, and I've not been able to get in touch with any of them. I pray they are safe and have gone to safe areas.
I was born and raised in the shabby part of town, or "downtown".....lower Ninth Ward, to be precise. When I got into the military and heard people refer to "downtown" as the city of San Diego I thought they were insane. :-)
Of course, it's OK. I'm from "the other side of the tracks." :-)
I have a feeling after this is over, cindy sheehan will be begging for face time. She might as well pack her tent now, her 15 minutes are UP.
That Mayor is an idiot to be kind! Cannot believe they waited this long either which should be criminal.
Love how the crappy audio feed makes the President's speech sound like the voice of Satan. Another stunning disaster from the White House PR dept.
Okay, I was in Charleston in '89 during Hugo. The ARC was first to Charleston; beating FEMA by a good three days. I don't recall ARC charging anyone for anything.
The only charity that did better than ARC was NMCRS (Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society), who were cutting $1,000 checks to families.
yup , and the area of Superdome's roof is almost 10 acres , I wouldn't wanna be in there , I'd get outta town somehow
Sweet Mary and Joseph ... tiday surge topping levees by 10 to 12 feet.
Another point of non-comparison: in Galveston, 1900, there were no offshore oil rigs, no chemical spills to worry about. The worst thing in the water afterwards was carrion, and Nature cleaned up after herself.
I think the superdome is about 270ft. high. Built in the '70s. Hope they planned ahead.
Same with Aruba and the Twitty family.
Not too very unusual. Grand Isle roads flood on a higher-than-normal high tide.
Beautiful landmarks and Universities destroyed or gone forever.
From all the doomsday scenarios, they say New Orleans as we knew it, will cease to exist and will never be rebuilt.
I can't believe I am saying this..

Regarding..... Free Republic.... being..... slow....I....noticed.....the same...thing....better...slow....than....a...crash....
Methinks silentknight protests too loudly.
Not even President Bush's comments from Crawford can preempt MSNBC's Katrina coverage.
