Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

Oh, you're saying that since WWII is too old to use as an example then how about something more recent:

In the early 60s Charleston, S.C. was hit by a hurricane. I was stationed there and the Navy volunteered its services for the clean-up effort.

While the cameras were on, the Red Cross was "giving" coffee to everyone. As soon as the press left they started charging $1.00 per cup. This was early 60s $s.

Way to go "Red Cross!"

( I won't even mention the recent corruption and fraud charges against the exaulted "Red Cross," OK? )

Let me guess...the Mayor and City Council are taking refuge in Harrah's Casino on Canal Street. :)

If Katrina hit here, I’d be heading out. Fortunately, we only get hit about once a decade – and then with a cat 1 (so far).

"Did you read what I posted? There is no "downtown" in New Orleans. It is "uptown."

Well, I somehow completely missed your point (sorry about that, I got 2 hours sleep last night). All I know is that I worked in the Central Business District of N.O. for many, many years and we always called it either the "CBD" or "downtown". And to us, "uptown" is the Garden District. Guess different people call it different things. Is that OK?

Is there such a thing as a Category 6?

This is terrifying. I fell asleep to a 3, almost 4, woke up to a 5 that just keeps getting stronger.

You have Bush, we have Blanco. It starts at the top!

I have no idea what "lack of planning" you blame Bush for, but the do nothing government in Louisiana was there long before Blanco. OH and before you tell me I don't know what I'm talking about, my family came to LA. in 1755 though the smart ones left after the War Between the States.

Wow, so sorry to hear that. We're praying for your family members there and all in the path of this monster. Unfortunately, she sounds like she'll be a monster well inland.

I must be very tired! I did not mean to support the Red Cross, somehow my "old mind" thought you were talking about the Salvation Army. Actually I agree with you completely on the Red Cross. Sorry for my screw up!

I emailed Fox and told them about the ground floor in back of Jefferson. That all but one nurse is left to care for the patients.

I told them I would not be able to sleep tonight knowing what I just heard.
