Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

Hey Congrats! You'll NEVER regret homeschooling! We started with Abekka too, and stayed with some of their books all through the years. Saxon Math caused my daughter to test into CALCULUS going into college. Saxon Math is a must! And MOVE INTO your LOCAL LIBRARY, lol. Kids who learn to love to read, will succeed! :-)
These are some of the dumbest people talking I have ever heard. Why not request TX, OK, and NM for their Guard units earlier? Instead they wait and place our Guards in danger. The Mayor and City Council should be brought up on charges of endangerment!
I've been on the phone like a madman - I've got a cousin who won't leave her home. She won't listen to reason either...
Is that Central time?
You can rant all over me if it makes you feel better. I simply told you why the Red Cross had lost a great deal of its support.
Further, in regards to your debate: First, you said it wasn't the fault of the Red Cross. Then, you said that organizations can learn from their mistakes.
Those people kinda freaked me too. I do feel sorry for them, no one realzed New Orleans would be hit with this and their flight home to try to get out got cancelled.
I saw them - and I noted that the look in the woman's eyes changed considerably after talking with the news guy. I don't think that they were quite aware of the weight of the situation before their discussion. I'm not sure that they were afterwards either, but I saw a little fear starting to grow.
I fear that is going to nothing what MAY happen this time around..last I heard this time only people with special needs are allowed in the LA Superdome..please correct me if this not true...
Maybe the inbound ones are people going to pick up stranded family members or friends?
Absolutely!
I have only visited NO once, but I understand and share you sadness.
I'm far away and perfectly safein VA - but this is very, very scary.
I know. And even if it did turn a bit the storm is so big it will be catastrophic anyway. But there is no talking to anyone down there. They've been so damned lucky (dumb luck, obiously) for so long they are not dealing with this storm in a rational way. Believe it or not but hundreds of thousands of people are going to "ride it out."
It's hard to compare the 1900 storm, but if this Katrina hits NO, the property damage is sure to be much worse, and I can only pray the death toll will be less. Galveston in 1900 lost a lot of lives---many thousands---because so many people didn't take the warnings seriously, and many heard no warnings at all. Plus there was a Labor Day surplus of vacationers.
Galveston Island was no more than 15 feet above sea level at its highest point, and yet with high tide and storm surge, it was probably fully submerged around late afternoon. The physical damage from the storm was largely due to debris pounding against buildings in successive waves, street by street in some places, the houses fell like dominoes and were sent to the next row to batter more houses down. Flying debris was everywhere---which is why I can only shudder at the idea of packing people into a superdome for shelter. Winds at the superdome, surrounded by tall buildings, would be higher than winds at ground level, and they would be delivering deadly missiles of debris.
Is that Central time?
Must be.
Getting close to posting the new thread.
Nope. Not just you.
"The American Red Cross was basically FORCED to charge that by the Red Cross overseas"
No one forced them to charge the chopper pilots $1.50 for a cup of coffee and stale donut in a California forest fire in the 70s!
the Red Cross is a money grabbing POS!
