Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

Mayor Ray said "awesome" in response to hearing the winds are now 175 mph. He also said to fill your bathtub. I beleive everyone's will be filled by Mother Nature.

Oh yea – but being about 40 miles from the ocean, a mile from the James River and about 2 miles from the York River it shouldn’t be too bad (I hope).

While only a dozen feet above sea level, I'm about 40 miles inland.

Lucky you :) I'm only 9miles inland - from both the Chesapake and the Atlantic!

I'm in utter stunned shock over the incompetence of the LA officials.

They've been in "cover their ass" mode for at least 24 hours. The legalism, dragging their feet, and noticeably mentioning that the President ordered the mandatory evac was so that if the cane misses enough that there isn't the catastrophic damage, they can pass the buck and blame to him for the massive looting that will occur. Trying to avoid a political backlash from a constituency that if spared will bitch instead of consider themselves lucky.

This bravado about how they'll "...leave the prisoners in the jails where they belong..." is criminally negligent if those jails aren't above a waterline that could reasonably be anticipated.

The actions of NO "town fathers" during the flood of 1927 are very instructive. Press gangs, dynamiting levees upstream in the dead of night so "somebody else" is wiped out, etc... The book, "The Rising Tide" is a good read.

They opened the contraflow lanes at 4PM yesterday. You just can't see it from those video cam views.

And that's fourteen hours till the (current) 170+ winds hit. How much shorter until winds that work against evacuation come on shore? I can't begin to tell you how disgusted I am with that mayor and governor.

Wow! City official: We have already evacuated emergency crews out of the area to be on standby.

[But they failed to allow the public that luxury of time.]

[I bet city officials have already gotten their own families evacuated out of the area, too.]

Sickest feeling in the pit of my stomach .... they're describing the Doom's Day scenario ....and the clock is ticking too fast for all that's left to be done. I wish they'd just end it now and GET MOVING! These people truly need God's mercy.
