NOAA - NHC ^ | 27 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/27/2005 8:05:55 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

Mississippi has reversed the "southbound" lanes of the 55 and 59. But no word about Louisiana.

Do they think they can survive 10 weeks in a high rise building?"

no electricity .. no AC, no elevator, probably windows that don't open .. not a good scenario.

bottom line on "emergency shelters" .....
it makes it easyer to find the bodies , keeps them in one place.
clean up can be a bitch .....

We are going to witness the worst natural disaster in American history and there's not a damn thing we can do about it.

Good to see you Dog. I just got up myself to see things have gotten even worse. Looks like you were quite right about it. It'll be compounded by these nitwits running the state and city. The loss of life might be high along with the loss of New Orleans.

That's what the wife and I were talking about in disbelief. We couldn't believe the mayor was messing around with lawyers instead of trying to ensure the safety of the residents of his city. But, we really couldn't believe that when he is failing to be a leader, the governor wouldn't step in. What is wrong with those people?

Then, they will all blame GW when the storm hits and people did not get out in time. He will be blamed for not giving the mandatory evac orders.

Idiots.

LOL!

I think Bill Clinton did the shopping, he likes to pick what Helen wears for their romps.

11:00 am advisory should be coming soon, hope it shows weakening.

The news just announced that there aren't enough shelters in New Orleans that can handle a cat 5, and they are only opening them for people who are unable to evacuate.
One of the reasons I choose to live here in the Hampton Roads area is the weather – very few hurricanes, and the one we get every decade or so is no more than a cat1 (so far). Mild winters and bearable summers. We call dust devils tornadoes. No major brush or forest fires, no mud slides, no noticeable earthquakes.

I really can't remember the last time I saw such a lack of leadership.

What I don't get is that we've heard that New Orleans has had a plan for this sort of thing for years. And now it's here.

But this mayor had to talk with his lawyers firs to see if he could order an evacuation.

Did he not consult The Plan?

It is 9:44am CDT. The eye of a category 5 hurricane is forecast to be over New Orleans by 1am CDT tomorrow. They are just now ordering the evacuation. This leaves people around 14 hours. At least one interstate through the city (I-10) is at total gridlock, with the mandatory evacuation order now adding to the overall traffic in the city. The Director of FEMA has said that agency evacuation models require 48-72 hours for a city of this size, also that it requires the Governor and Mayor to order it. Major traffic jams can easily last over 14 hours.
