MILITARY 'SPIED' ON RICE (More Able Danger leaks from Specter staffers)

Cyber-sleuths working for a Pentagon intelligence unit that reportedly identified some of the 9/11 hijackers before the attack were fired by military officials, after they mistakenly pinpointed Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and other prominent Americans as potential security risks, The Post has learned.

The private contractors working for the counter-terrorism unit Able Danger lost their jobs in May 2000. The firings following a series of analyses that Pentagon lawyers feared were dangerously close to violating laws banning the military from spying on Americans, sources said.

The Pentagon canceled its contract with the private firm shortly after the analysts — who were working on identifying al Qaeda operatives — produced a particularly controversial chart on proliferation of sensitive technology to China, the sources said.

Sources said the private contractors, using sophisticated computer software that sifts through massive amounts of raw data to establish patterns, came up with a chart of Chinese strategic and business connections in the U.S.

The China chart was put together by James Smith, who confirmed yesterday that his contract with the military was canceled and he was fired from his company because the military brass became concerned about the focus on U.S. citizens.

Sometime last year, not sure when, the NY Post or Daily News had a small story on someone who was caught with a gun and he told them he was Rice's security. Im looking for the story but the man was also in possesion of her phone number and I dont think it was a number for public use.

Sorry folks, we have to back off from the idea that it was Susan Rice that Able Danger pinpointed.

There is no doubt that it was Condoleezza Rice, if not the program was not working. This story was out there (although this particular article was written about a year later):

I have no idea how serious this is/was. As a professor at Stanford Ms Rice would not have issued security clearances or had any influence on military procurements or sales. However, in a data mining exercise regarding Chinese strategic and business connections in the U.S. she would definitely have turned up. (Looks like yet another score for Able Danger!)

That the program was terminated because Ms Rice's name turned up is something I think belongs among the fairy tales.

I'm absolutely of the same mind. Someone is spinning that take on it .. leaving out Bernard Schwartz of Loral, William Perry, and all Bubba's pimps and opportunists.

There would've been NO reason for Bubba (or Reno/Gorelick/Lindsey/Shriller/Ickes/Berger et al) to end the program because Condi Rice's name appeared ..in fact, if there was ANYTHING suspicious about her, they couldn't have leaked it fast enough to hurt W.

But, there would've been PLENTY of reason to end it .. if someone was actually doing their job to protect US and the Able Danger project discovered the admin. scuzzballs in the shady and seditious relationships and arrangements we KNOW existed.

More likely it was shut down because so many of Bill and Hillaries Chinese friends showed up on the list. Clinton is responsible (IMHO) for allowing our sensitive technology to be sold to China by Loral and other defense contractors.

From what I understand...the charts can be recreated using the same software. While it would be best to have original data...showing how it worked in the first place could be quite damaging to those on the chart. And their allies.

This must be pursued to the last.

Linda Chavez' attempted debunking of Able Danger in the Washington Times today is intended to protect certain Republicans, who like Clinton, were on the take from the Chinese.

So we are being governed by the Chinese ? I guess its better then having to pray to Mecca everyday. Looks like WWIII already ended. China owns our feds. Walmart sells their goods. Perhaps WWIV will be between the Chinese and the Islamists.

Exactly -- I suspect Gorelick's clones in the General Counsel's office of the DOD freaked out at the realization of what real info about Clinton administration culpability in Chinese technology 'transfers' from the USA would mean.... they're giving the examples of Rice and William Perry (Clinton's former Sec. of Defense) at Stanford to make the program seem as ridiculous as possible..... human common sense must be applied before even beginning to choose which names to look at from such a list..... but lawyers have no common sense, ergo, they assume no one else does either. I was thinking the other day...I hope this story is going to show what the power of Internet forums and blogs can do...even beyond the Rathergate episode.

Rathergate was child's play compared to the clever spin and misdirection efforts that will be expended to quash or diminish this story.

I think it is easier to navigate around BS when you try to think logically, observe details, and keep an open mind.
