TIME TRAVEL

ARE YOU READY? The Canteen is about to embark on another journey back in time.

If you're brave enough, climb aboard, no ticket required……we're about to take off.

Come on, hop in, watch your step ...... Let me set my controls.

Buckle up. Now don't be afraid....I know how to fly this thing.......Here we goooooooooo.......

WHOOOOOOSHHHHHHHH

Here we are - 1950s - again? (banging on dash, twisting knobs, pushing levers, repeatedly) I wonder if this thing is broken? Dang it. I thought Jet Jaguar fixed this thing. I’m going to have to have a talk with him. I guess I’ll turn on the television to see what is on.

Do any of you remember these shows?

"The Burns and Allen Show"

1950-1958

Black and White - 30 minutes - CBS

Burns and Allen Cast

George Burns = HIMSELF

Gracie Allen = HERSELF

Blanche Morton = BEA BENADRET

Harry Morton = HAL MARCH

JOHN BROWN

FRED CLARK

LARRY KEATING

Ronnie Burns = HIMSELF

Bill Goodwin = HIMSELF

Harry Von Zell = HIMSELF

Burns and Allen Trivia

THE BURNS AND ALLEN SHOW began in 1933 and had a successful seventeen-year run. Although they were wed 7 January 1926, Burns and Allen didn't acknowledge it on radio until 1942.

SAMPLE of wit:

Real Estate Agent: I presume the bedrooms are upstairs.

Gracie: Yes, except when you're upstairs. Then they're on the same floor.

THE "GOOD NIGHT, GRACIE" MYTH = It's a show-business myth that Gracie replied to my request to "Say goodnight, Gracie," by saying, "Good night, Gracie." In fact, that's probably one of the most misquoted lines in theater history. Maybe she said it once, but I don't even remember that. She simply said, "Good night." There were many reasons for that, the main one was that I just never thought of it, from now on she will have said it. --George Burns

NO. 1 FAN???

Theme Song

"Love Nest" by Louis A Hisch and Otto Harbach.

Passings

Gracie passed away in 1964. Burns passed away in 1996 at a ripe old age of 100.

Topper

10/9/1953 - 9/30/1955

Black and White - 30 minutes - CBS

78 total episodes

Based on Thorne Smith's book

Topper Cast

Leo G. Carroll as Cosmo Topper

Anne Jeffreys as Marion Kerby

Robert Sterling as George Kerby

Lee Patrick as Henrietta Topper

Thurston Hall as Mr. Schuyler

Buck as Neil

Topper Theme Song

**none listed**

Topper Tidbits

Serious banker Cosmo Topper (Leo G. Carroll) and his wife Henrietta (Lee Patrick) move into a new home. Much to Cosmo's dismay, the house is haunted by the previous owners, George (Robert Sterling) and Marion Kirby (Anne Jeffreys). Worse, only Topper could see or hear them.

The Kerbys had died in a skiing accident on their fifth wedding anniversary. Their beloved St Bernard dog Neil (Buck) had tried to rescue them and lost his life in the attempt. Poor Neil had developed a drinking problem with a preference for brandy.

Passings

Leo G. Carroll died in 1972 of cancer, and Lee Patrick in 1982 of heart problems.

I Love Lucy

30 minutes B&W - CBS - 179 episodes

I Love Lucy Cast

Vivian Vance as Ethel Mertz

William Frawley as Fred Mertz

(1956-57) Keith Thibodeaux

I Love Lucy Theme Song

"I Love Lucy" by Harold Adamson and Eliot Daniel

"I love Lucy and she loves me

We're as happy as two can be

Sometimes we quarrel but then

How we love making up again

Lucy kisses like no one can

She's my Mrs. and I'm her man

And life is heaven you see

'Cause I love Lucy

Yes I love Lucy

And Lucy loves me!"

I Love Lucy Tidbits

Lucille Ball was a pathfinder who paved the way for all the women in TV to follow.

She proved women could be the leads and carry a show. Not one show, but several.

She was the first female head of a studio. While running Desilu, her willingness to take a risk lead her to approve production of Mission Impossible and Star Trek. That's right, without Lucille Ball, no Captain Kirk.

She was a woman who didn't mind looking funny, as long as she WAS funny.

None of which takes away from Desi Arnaz's estimable talents as a producer. His "can do" attitude made the "I Love Lucy Show" work. He innovated the three camera filming format still in use today. Previously, shows like this were performed before a live audience and preserved on kinescope which makes poor copies. Desi's filiming of Lucy is the reason there are great copies today.

Passings

William Frawley died in 1966 of a heart attack, Vivian Vance in 1979 of breast and bone cancer, Desi Arnaz in 1986 of lung cancer, and Lucille Ball in 1989 of an acute rupture of the abdominal aorta.

That's the end of the ride for today. Please watch your step on exiting the time machine. Now that I've shown you a few, how about you share something from your memory. Or, if one of these were your favorite show then, share a memory of the best episode for you.

I do the same...and with all I write, I routinely let something slip through.

I just thought that explantation was some kind of new-fangled word for things that slip silently into the night...

Edith wears them. ;)

(Of course, being an editor, she's trying to force her writers to comply. But so far, I've refused to compromise my values!)
