It makes sense that OBL is in Iran because members of his family were reportedly flown there for protection. The Iranian Rev Guard would be grateful to and in awe of any muslim who bestowed as much damage on the USA as Bin Laden did. And the muslim culture demands that "guests" be treated honorably.
Then there's the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" strategy, where other differences between Shia and Sunni are put aside for a larger common cause, at least temporarily.
Now, there's the slight matter of the fact that Bin's guys have plans to eliminate the Shia "apostates" as part of their domination scheme, and have been doing a job on the Shia in Iraq....the al Qaada rancor against anmd hatred for the Shia and plans for their destuction were blabbed in a communique by al Zarqawi...who has NOT headed toward Iran in a search foro sanctuary.
Ccertainly the Iranian hardliners are aware that by harboring Bin Laden, they are harboring a cobra. It may even be that Binnie is as much an "involuntary guest" of the Iranians as a voluntary one, even if he is being treated as an honored detainee....Making the Iranian mullahs better able to try and take control of the global anti-West jihad.

Why did Teddy need protection? From what I have read Teddy was the FATHER of many conservation efforts. If Wheeler authored the Reagan doctrine he immediately earns my respect.
I voted for Reagan twice. And I am as conservative as it gets.
I also happen to respect Teddy Roosevelt, he was a hunter, conservationist and his contributions to wildlife management were astounding.

Sorry my friend but I think your analogy is flawed. During the 1940s, the Soviet Union and the United States (not exactly what we'd call friends) put aside their differences to fight a common enemy which they determined was a greater threat to both nations individually and collectively.
The US is the greater threat to Iran and Al Qaeda right now so they've probably put aside their differences for the time being.
Finally, Sunnis and Shiites don't seem to have a problem being friends when it comes to their hatred and attacks against Israel.
