Salt Lake mayor calls for protest of Bush
AP ^ | 8/20/05

Salt Lake City's Mayor Rocky Anderson used e-mail this week to call for "the biggest demonstration this state has ever seen," when President Bush appears before a national veterans convention Monday. Anderson says Bush policies are disastrous for the country and that to stay quiet during the president's visit would be send a message of apathy.

The mayor's e-mail called for a collaboration of health care advocates, seniors, gay and lesbian advocates, anti-Patriot advocates, civil libertarians and anti-war folks to protest outside the convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mike Parkin, senior vice commander of the V-F-W's Atomic Post 4355 in Salt Lake says the move makes Anderson look unpatriotic.

The Vietnam vet, who says he voted for Anderson, but won't again, says the protest will offend veterans and embolden enemies of the U.S.

I must have missed something. Utah is one of the most conservative states in the country. How in heck did it end up with a liberal mayor for its largest city? For a start, I would expect to see Mormons outside city hall, protesting his election.

"the biggest demonstration this state has ever seen,"

That would be what? 4 people?

Perhaps the mayor does prefer that. If so to do nothing "would send a message of apathy".

The other probability here is that the DNC is promoting this, like they do most of their anti-conservative demonstrations. And of course, targeting the red states and places where they would like to stir up as much anti-right hate as they can.

I would a large sum on this probability. That stinking mayor will probably have a new Hummer in his driveway soon.

I read a story on FR either today or yesterday that said Utah was gay friendliest, or however they phrase it, state. With the mayor calling for gays to protest...

At last! I saw his picture and the first thing I thought of was that old song from the Village People "Macho Man". Put him in a uniform he could be the cop.

I guess I figured SLC was conservative, like the rest of UT. Maybe I'm wrong. How did this America hating lefty get elected there??

I daresay that most of Utah's Democrats live in Salt Lake City. A fair number are associated with the University of Utah.

They are Republicans and they do support Bush...hummm should be interesting....

When JFK went to Salt Lake, I was living there then, and the people boooed him, there were some that cheered, but most of them booed him.

Well since the Illinois VFW thinks Bush sent Nazi's to GITMO, after all the gave a standing O to little dickie Durbin after his nazi speech, and the national organization supported the Dead Red from Minnesota, maybe the Mayor has something in common with the VFW.

Skip the protests, let's get on with the Civil War II so we can end this once and for all.

There's more in the Salt Lake Tribune. I especially liked the full quotations:

-snip-

The mayor's message drew a howl of outrage from Mike Parkin, senior vice commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Atomic Post 4355 in Salt Lake City.

"Excuse my French, but - that son of a bitch!" he said. "It makes the mayor look very, very unpatriotic. It makes him look despicable."

Parkin said such demonstrations, particularly against the Iraq war, give comfort to America's enemies and will be particularly offensive to the 13,000 to 14,000 veterans gathering at the convention.

"I voted for the son of a bitch and I'll never vote for him again," said the Vietnam War veteran.

He wants the anti-this, anti-that, and anti-others. I wonder if those vets can come up with one of those anti-weapons for all those anti-Americans.
