Boxer and Feinstein: Two pro-choice senators, two views of John Roberts
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 8/19/5 | Carolyn Lochhead

Washington -- Fourteen years ago, Professor Anita Hill's explosive charges of sexual harassment during the Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas helped produce the election a year later of California's two senators in "The Year of the Woman."

Next month, Democratic Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein will play starring roles in another contentious Supreme Court confirmation hearing for the nominee of another President Bush, where women's issues again promise to eclipse all others.

Although their views on the core issue of preserving abortion rights are identical, their styles and strategies are wildly different. Judging from their statements so far, Boxer and Feinstein appear likely to split on the nomination of Judge John Roberts.

Their strikingly divergent approaches, analysts say, reflect a deeper divide within the Democratic Party over how to handle the Roberts nomination while trying to win back the White House and Congress.

Boxer is an agitator from the left who threatened in a speech in San Francisco this month to "use all the parliamentary tools I've been given as a U.S. senator'' to delay a vote on Roberts if necessary, stopping just short of threatening a filibuster.

Feinstein is a moderate who, the day after he was nominated, declared Roberts safe from filibuster barring some shocking revelation.

"Nobody expects this president to appoint a liberal to the court," Feinstein said in an interview that day. "It isn't going to happen."

Boxer is easily one of the three dullest bulbs flickering in the US Senate. Gives great quotes though.

"Those who survived the San Francisco earthquake said, 'Thank God, I'm still alive.' But, of course, those who died, their lives will never be the same again."

Feinstein knows when to head to the middle of the road. Boxer has never been out of the ditch even to look around.

I think the more logical explanation is that Feinstein is up for re-election in 2008, so she needs to be able to point to this vote to show she's not as extreme as whoever the party nominates for President.

Boxer, for her part, has just finished writing a novel -- described as a political thriller and set for release in October -- about the adventures of a female Democratic senator from California during a fiery Supreme Court nomination.

How cute and how imaginative.

Well, though she's a liberal, I kind of like Diane Feinstien. She's that rare thing - an old fashioned liberal. She's to the left, but I believe she can be trusted to sit in the high councils of state. I don't doubt her loyalty to this country.

And, of course, she took over admirably in San Fransisco under the worst imaginable circumstances. She was also, arguably, the last sane Mayor of San Fransisco.

The rats are between a rock and a hard place. If they obstruct they lose voters. If they fail to placate their base they lose voters. I expect them to stall with a MSM propaganda blitz. Use it to raise money. That will last only as long as the Republicans let it happen. When time is running out the rats will come out with some fabricated slander. Minutes later the scandal is exposed by Buckhead or some other Freeper. Eventually the rats will cave when the first internal polls show moderate voters getting pissed.

2006 is going to be an excellent year for Republicans.

Tale of Two Senators-

One won re-election and isn't likely to run again.

The other has an election still to come.

Kind of interesting when you consider California is Liberal and seen as a lost cause, and yet, Di feels the need to remain distant from Boxer & moveon.org even though she'll probably win.

I doubt it's because she fears her electoral chances, rather, she wishes a future as a power broker so she's straddling the fence with a more subdued approach.

The collective IQ of those who vote for Boxer must be a huge drag on the rest of California.
