This seems like its getting to be a little bit of a turf battle betweent the Post and NY Times, with the Post downplaying it every chance they get.

"The former intelligence officer who says that a Defense Department program identified Mohamed Atta and three other hijackers before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks said yesterday that many of his allegations are not based on his memory but on the recollections of others. "

Paid adminstrative leave for 17 months - - what gives there? If this were an anti-Bush guy we'd be all over him for that. Or would we?

The Washington Post, that great source of investigative journalism, is pouring water on this story.

Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer, who has been on paid administrative leave from the Defense Intelligence Agency since his security clearance was suspended in March 2004I thought I read the suspension was lifted; it was over like $60 worth of personal calls. And he was promoted last year so it's unlikely his security clearance is still in effect.

All of the charts that could support his claims have disappeared, he said. In Sandy Burglar Berger pants?

said yesterday that many of his allegations are not based on his memory but on the recollections of othersHmmmm.
I will withhold coming to any conclusions until some undeniable proof emerges (probably what Sandy Burglar took).

We'll hear a lot of people trying to downplay or discredit Able Danger for awhile. Pay no attention to the liberal behind the curtain.
This needs to play out, and a lot of pressure from the American people has to make sure that happens.
In my opinion, the way the left immediately reacted to the news tells the real story. There's something here. One liberal talking head on FOX actually "questioned the timing" rather than the message.

" But he said he is relying on the word of Phillpott and the civilian employee, who pointed to one of the charts and said, "We had them."
I'm sure Hillary will go to the floor of the Senate and wave around this article, screeching " We had them."
Like she did with the false NY Post headline that Bush Knew.

It seems to me that someone's going to have to produce the chart with Atta's name on it in order for the Able Danger charges to be taken seriously. From the end of the article:
Time magazine reported last week that Weldon said he is no longer sure that Atta was included on the chart he gave Hadley. But Weldon's chief of staff said yesterday that Atta was on the chart and that it was produced in 1999. Representatives for Hadley, who is now President Bush's national security adviser, have declined to comment on Weldon's claims
This part has made the least sense to me. If the chart given to Hadley included Atta, why wouldn't he have made a big deal about it when he went in front of the 9/11 Commission?

As long as he is in the public eye, they will never fire him. An added benefit to him going public with the Able Danger info is that he has insulated himself from any serious job related problems. Promotions may not be in his future, but he now has great job security.
