Amy Milligan 15, was flown to Carolinas Medical Center and placed in the pediatric ICU department in a coma.
Her mother, Fran Milligan, was driving the car that was hit.
"How many years will it be that we'll be affected? What will the rest of her life be like? It will be nothing like what she imagined," she said.
Police said 21-year-old Marin Gomez was driving drunk when the accident happened in Richmond County. They also think he's in the country illegally and immigration agents are investigating.
"Right now, everything is running all together for me," said Fran Milligan.
Amy was trapped in the car for 40 minutes. She's suffered multiple injuries including two collapsed lungs, and broken ribs, and has been through two strokes.
"We're not going to have the same Amy," said Fran Milligan.
Amy's aunt, Lorri Oxenbine, can't believe one man's actions have changed so many lives.
"Anger that he's ruined Amy's life, her future, ruined my sister's life and her future, completely changed it. And that he's also ruined his own," she said.
Police said Gomez ran from the scene, but was later caught.
Authorities have charged him with felony hit-and-run, two counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon, driving while impaired, no license, having a fake tag, and careless and reckless driving.
Congresswoman Sue Myrick is holding a town hall meeting Tuesday night as part of her effort to toughen laws against illegal immigrants.
Myrick is proposing new legislation called the Scott Gardner Act. Gardner was a Mount Holly schoolteacher killed when an illegal immigrant hit the car carrying him and his family.
The immigrant had five prior DWI convictions.
Myrick said he should have been deported.
The meeting is at 7 p.m. inside Myrick's office on West Main Street in Gastonia.
I believe vigilantes may start doing some of their own deporting.
"Should be locked up for 20 years and then deported"
I don't want to pay for that. How about flogging them to the border with a cat?
You see this?
Dang! You beat me again! What time do you wake up? :-)
Usually, before sunrise. Good Morning, TaxRelief! :)
We had one of these runners in my town except some who witnessed the accident followed him and pointed him out to the cops (cellphones have a purpose I guess). But of course he is of the vibrant diversity and we had better celebrate him, or else.
Excellent idea.
Some federal judge will step in and say that because he is an illegal, it is a usurpation of federal jurisdiction to allow local and state officials to charge them with anything, that only the feds should deal with them.(like what happened to that new england case last week where an illegal had his trespassing vagrancy charges thrown out)...just watch...the fed's will assume jurisdiction and the illegal will "disappear" some place into another part of the country!
The level of my anger can best be described by saying that, in my opinion, he should not have had the opportunity to be convicted of a single one.
Illegal?
Deported.
End of story.
And when he's done doing that, he can come out to where I live and do the same for the widow of a friend who was killed in the same way.
Skip may be onto something here. hmmm...
And yet buisness' will say we "need" the illegals to work because they will work for wages we pay. And they will lobby for immigration reform (open the borders and check noone).
Easily fixed.
First illegal enty: Immediate deportation.
Second illegal entry: shoot on sight.
End of "series".
These stories seem to happen daily now.
I open my local paper every day and read reports of people with Hispanic last name, being involved in serious accidents.I don't know if it's because of sheer number of Hispanics here or the fact that these people just can't drive worth a crap.
We should convert him with love. Later, he can write a book; enter the talk show circuit; then at last public office. Tolerance IS the only way!
"Unfortunately deporting does not work because most of them reenter our country illegally. Give them long prison sentences and deduct the cost of incarceration from aid we give to the illegal's country of origin."
==========================================
There is a problem with even that - a big one. See #77.
Our court system is at critical mass and ready to explode with the increased pressure of the illegal alien case load. Our prisons are bloated and we can't build them fast enough. We already have more people incarcerated than any other nation in the world - including Communist China (who has more than a billion people).
We're in trouble.
I am praying that one of these family members becomes the post child for campigning against illegal immigration. How many more innocent Americans have to be victimized by illegal aliens and then also have to turn around and pay financially for a crime that they were the victim of?
