U.S. gun rights at issue in UN effort
New Orleans Times-Picayune ^ | August 13, 2005 | Bruce Alpert

Expressing concern that the United Nations' efforts to stem international gun running could impede the rights of U.S. gun owners, Sen. David Vitter, R-La., is proposing legislation to bar financing for the world organization should it infringe on Americans' Second Amendment rights.

Critics of Vitter's bill, including Eric Howard of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, accuse the freshman senator of placating voters who oppose gun control and are cynical about the United Nations. Howard said the bill could torpedo international efforts to stem the flow of arms to brutal militias in Africa and elsewhere that target civilians, particularly children.

Vitter, who calls his bill The Second Amendment Protection Act of 2005, said he's all for reducing the spread of weapons to terrorists, criminals or violent insurgents. "But the UN efforts seem to go well beyond that into an area that threatens the Second Amendment rights of Americans to keep and bear arms," he said.

Among the steps Vitter said have been discussed by UN delegates at a recent meeting are tracking lists of all firearm sales, worldwide record-keeping of all manufactured guns and even the licensing of all gun owners, measures he said are anathema to U.S. gun owners.

Vitter, who introduced his bill just before the start of the August recess, has nine co-sponsors, all Republicans.

Rebecca Peters, director of the London-based International Action Network on Small Arms, said that while the National Rifle Association is trying to portray the UN effort as an attempt to require Americans to register their guns, the consensus of delegates who met at the United Nations last month is quite different.

Dear UN,

.....Criminals, Dictators and Terrorists do not follow laws, yours , ours or theirs. Passing such a law will just make more criminals....as in me.

I'm with you on the underestimates of Democrat vote fraud. In the 2000 election weren't there more Demo votes in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh than registered Demo voters?

placating voters who oppose gun control and are cynical about the United Nations.

Ummmmm that would be nearly two thirds of the country? Here's hoping!

Kofe and the other crooks in the UN have killed more children in the Oil for Food rip-off than have died in the US from guns. And including 16-18 yr. old gangbangers shouldn't count in the stats either.

The ballot box comes before the cartridge box.

Show me where we get to vote the U.N. out.

No matter which party we vote for, the U.N. just gets more power.

I will bet that the U.N. has very little support in the United States, not too mention that Dubya has cut them off at the knees since day one.

You're still avoiding my question. How can you honestly believe that the people will rise up against the U.N. gun grabbers when the people haven't even twitched as our local gun grabbers annihilate the Second Amendment?

Rebecca Peters

"Throughout our remarks, we have stressed that the PoA is a good start. To have any impact on the global problem of weapons proliferation, the international community must adopt measures that tackle the problem from the factory door to the arms-affected community."

"Therefore, we, as members of IANSA, but also as part of civil society committed to stopping the deadly human cost of small arms proliferation and misuse, call for governments to take the following steps to reinvigorate their commitments under the PoA and move the small arms issue forward. States must:
"........
· Develop an international regime for the standardization, authentication, verification, and continued monitoring of end-user commitments.
· Fulfil existing government responsibilities to comply with international. humanitarian and human rights law, including by exercising due control over private actors.
· Ensure that police and armed forces strictly uphold international standards.
· Develop controls on civilian possession and use. Ban civilian possession of military assault weapons,
· Promote security sector reform, including increased wages, educational incentives, human rights training, and judicial reform.
· Engage civil society in the process of developing national action plans.
· Coordinate local, national, regional, and global measures to implement the PoA systematically and comprehensively."

Nah....... no need to worry - the UN & IANSA aren't going to take our guns away from us at all. Hey - wait - Don't pay any attention to that man behind the curtain!!!!!!!

Yes, we certainly wouldn't want to do anything that would please the people who voted for us, expecially those that (gasp) like guns and dislike the UN and other snobby, meddling organizations that would trample US sovereignty. Doh!

I see that the always clueless Rebecca Peters is mentioned in the article. She's the moonbat who tried to tell Wayne LaPierre that gun owners should take up another hobby. May the gun-control bozos always be so stupid.

When are these people going to wake up and understand that people who would do such things will not be restrained by a simple law? When will they understand that guns aren't even necessary to accomplish a genocide or a massacre (Ghenghis Khan didn't need guns, and neither did the animals who butchered several hundred thousand Rwandans - on Bill Clinton's watch - about 10 years ago)? When will they understand that manufacturing guns is not hard, and doing so without serial numbers that can be tracked is cheaper than with them?

And what, by the way, is wrong with listening to the complaints or concerns of voters who are against gun control and cynical about the UN? My observation is that a very substantial part of the electorate shares both views, and as part of the electorate they have a right to both express their views and to expect that their elected representatives at least explore the facts - if not enact legislation designed to protect them. The Brady Bunch certainly thinks that its views, and those of its supporters are worthy of Congressional action. Oh well, it is just another one of those logical disconnects that the anti-gunners are so well known.

Of course, the Brady Bunch knows this, and is just not telling anyone. They really think that people are so stupid as to buy all of their crap. Well, maybe some people are...but as time passes the number who believe their lies and half-truths is declining. Thankfully, the Internet has shed the light of truth on lots of lies, starting with those of the heavily biased and anti-gun MSM.

Because we'll put up with an awful lot of crap from domestic tyrants, whom we elected, and their agents, who were legally appointed or hired, than from foreign soldiers. I think that 90%-95% of the population would recoil in horror and anger at the very thought of foreign soldiers or policemen taking away our means of defense...of course, you'll never see that in a polling question, but that's another issue. Oh, and the other 5%-10% will make good tree ornaments.

The UN couldn't stick their thumb up their a$$ with both hands, so why do they think they could stem international gun running? And why does this effort concentrate so much on America's rights? The UN is an absolute debacle, and I highly suggest that they get their own house in order before trying to tell others what to do, and even then they can go pound sand.

Of course its for the children!Although I dont rember the children doing particullarly well under the soviet union from 1917 to 1990 and the penalty for firearms ownership there was death and I do somehow rember reading about all those starving children in china where private ownership of guns is also a no no (penalty being death)the cambodian children from 1976 to 1979 didnt thrive under pol pot after he outlawed all guns (as well as glasses dentures and more then 45 birthdays for any one individual penalty for infringing on the law was of course death) Maybe these stupid s o bs that are al l for gun control will not mind spending one year in a contry that has the death penalty for owning guns and if they survive and still feel the same about guns I will consider listening to their side of the story until then they need to STFU.
