CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Gas prices have reached another record high in North Carolina.
The average price is now $2.34 a gallon.
“The days of cheap gas are over,” said Sarah Davis of AAA Carolinas.
So is it time to trade in that gas-guzzling, sport utility vehicle for a gas-electric hybrid like the Toyota Prius?
When compared with the Ford Expedition, a popular SUV, the Prius would save more than $1,450 in gas costs per year. And that is for 15,000 miles at a cost of $2.34 a gallon. It could be even more.

"Consider how much you still owe on the vehicle that you want to trade in,” Davis said. “Consider what that trade-in value would be for you, and then consider how much you actually drive."
AAA says gas prices are nowhere close to topping off. In California, the average cost is $2.72 a gallon.
South Carolina enjoys the cheapest prices in the country. Its average is $2.25.

well if you trade in your 2003 Navigator for a hybrid youll lose more on the trade in than youll ever save on gas. So it is a rational economic choice to continue driving your 2002 or newer SUV regardless of gas prices.
Anyone with a bent toward dropping in a new kind of electronic engine into an SUV, like the old Chevy V6 refit drop into the 4 cycles, will have a booming business on his hands.
I don't know why anyone would write that way in that style with that much repetition. I really don't know.

If you want to save money on gas and the car..go out and buy a VW diesel. Much cheaper the hybrid and gets over 45mpg.
Or..buy yourself a cheap small used car..and put the saved payments on gas and car into oil co. stock.

No tiny death traps for me and my family. I don't care HOW many miles per gallon they get.
I'm going to continue driving my full-size truck, and my wife will continue driving herself and our daughter in our mid-sized SUV (In 2 more years, when that one hits ten years old, we're buying a newer full-size Tahoe).
As far as the price of gas goes, we will make other adjustments in our budget if needed, and will continue to try and get the current tax scam dropped in trade for the Fair Tax. That should give us extra dollars to feed our truck and SUV.
Actually, he's probably a member in good standing of the "Club To Stamp-Out And Get-Rid-Of Redundancy".
Given the price of a replacement battery for a hybrid, I don't know how much money even an SUV driver would save.
lets see... I have twins ... and possibly 2 more coming in the near future...
I can buy a SUV which seats them all ... or a hybrid which carries me and my lunch packed tightly...
close call... but I gotta stay with the SUV.
And that doesn't even take into account that I can write off the entire cost of the SUV from my federal taxes since it weights more than 6,000 pounds.
The Prius also has an assumed battery life-span of 5-6 years. The battery is about 40% of the cost of the car. The retail price of a Prius of far higher than some of the gas powered sub-compacts currently available on the market. In addition, it's an eggshell, and competent medical care isn't getting any cheaper if you get crushed in a car accident.
Anyway, guess I'm not convinced yet.
Lexus has introduced the new RX400h, but it's going for about 50K.
That's the way I feel too. I work at home and so I don't use much gas so d*mned it, I'll drive a Tahoe if I feel like it.
