This is the FAA accident report for the mid-air collision in Florida one year prior to the 9/11/01 attacks on the WTC and Pentagon (and PA).
I brought this up in the week of 9/11/01, but this story was apparently "lost" in the news at the time. There were subsequent articles on this topic, and where FReepers can still find them, they should be appended onto posts on this thread.
Some important points to consider:
the Saudi national who piloted his aircraft into the Piper Aztec commercial flight had received his pilot's license from the Phillipines
Early blogs at the time noted that the Saudi pilot was Mohamed Atta or Alhazmi's roommate (this point needs to be confirmed)
This was a 9/11 attack...9/11 of 2000, not 2001
The 9/11 Congressional Commission did NOT research earlier 9/11 attacks such as this one
The 9/11/01 terrorists received $100,000 wire transfer to Florida one week after their 9/11/2000 attack at Ft Pierce airport, on September 18, 2000 ( http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/timeline.jsp?timeline=complete_911_timeline&startpos=300#a062900transfer )
The Ft. Pierce 9/11/2000 attack was only 83 miles from the 9/11/2001 attackers' Del Ray beach condo
...and, this 9/11/2000 attack is relevant to the new discovery that *LAWYERS* in the Clinton Administration prevented Able Danger intel (and other information) on these terrorists from reaching the FBI (read: Gorelick's Wall).
Read the article again. Atta didn't die in this crash. His roommate did.

Dietrich Snell is one of the guys approached by Able Danger operatives.
Author Peter Lance later calls Snell one of the fixers, hired early on to sanitize the Commission's final report. Lance says Snell ignored evidence presented to the Commission that shows direct ties between the Bojinka plot and 9/11, and in so doing covers up Snell's own role in the failure to make more use of evidence learned from Murad and other Bojinka plotters. The fact that his roommate was involved in a fatal plane crash with a foreign pilot's license should have sent off some signals to those who should have been observing Atta. A sudden interest by Al Qaeda operatives in flying planes in the domestic US probably should have lit a few light bulbs a full year before 911.
And this investigation that never happened might have led to a prevention of the attacks on 911.

Yeah, I can imagine it. My husband used to warn me about the possibility of a terrorist attack every time I went to NYC. I just thought he was being overcautious. If he'd provided me with details, I would have taken it more seriously. But I guess the powers that be would just laugh it off. They still do. I called a few months ago to report a couple Arab men who were suspiciously scoping out a tractor-trailer hauling phenol (sp?), a very deadly chemical. They were in New Jersey, close to NYC. I called the State Police, who patrol that stretch of highway. They wanted to know everything about me, but refused to listen to any details about the men, their actions, or the rolling chemical bomb they were circling. Nothing came of it that day, but I'm sure it will.
Quite possible. It could be that the cell was given their order after bin Laden was made confident with the cell on this day, "You go one year from today, put your affairs in order".

I've always been amazed how many Saudis/Muslims come to the US....get very menial or no jobs at all....and then get smitten with the urge to become a pilot.
Last I looked, becoming a pilot and renting planes, albeit small ones, is not something you do without some visible means of support.
Unless, of course, your flying is being subsidized.
I would like to know just why this guy was practising flying a small plane...for a job?

So we have a coincidental crash of a Saudi piloted aircraft 1 year to the day prior to 9/11, and we have a coincidental skipping out of town by the family a few days before 9/11.
Nothing to see here. Move along.

Looks like Ameer had been in Vero Beach only about 3 months prior to his 9/11/2000 crash.
Interesting too, that the Bukhari's sued the FAA for $10 million. Not sure what happened with that lawsuit.
