Many reports of stations running out of gas. Could just be panic buying, but this is worrisome. I've got 3/4 of a tank but will be topping off before going home tonight - if I can find any gas.
Thank you, all4one. The ping to those helpful links came in very handy. I just donated.
OPINION: I think the water itself is bad enough.
Just read on our internet news site oil company fire in Prescott Arizona nes crew on the scene no other details right now.
Company was Bennet Oil COmpany fire under control in mop up stage making sure the runoff does not effect anything. This is located in downtown Prescott, Arizona
"Seeing lots of reports of gas panic, runs on gas stations, and stations running out of gas. Anyone else seeing this?"
I'm not.
I had a very enjoyable afternoon in town and everything is aok, traffic is the same, restaurants, malls doing fine.
No panic here, but I'm not sure what I'm making for dinner tonight.
Another FReeper on a different thread raised the issue of whether those being transferred from the Superdome have the option of heading out on their own rather than going to the Astrodome. Thought that was an interesting question!
Looters - don't even get me started.....

Here's a small articel Mata6858 regarding the fire:

I have not heard of ANY gas rationing, but I'll look and if I find something AD I'll post it here.
That question was just asked of the FEMA director and he said "OH YES, they will have to go" and also said "They will have to leave NO" There is no infrastructure to support them, even in the dry areas. However, those not in harms way will be left up to the Mayor as to what to do with them. [that is NOT the people in the Dome]
They are showing people getting on buses now. I guess after what they have lived in for two days, they are glad to go.
Ok, just checked.
GENERALLY SPEAKING: There are rumors of gas rationing going around. Most of the articles I found deal with the RUMORS of possible gas rationing and gas rationing through history. The rumors at this point are UNFOUNDED.
I'm going to check further, but FYI so far.
If anyone has a concrete url(s) to show that gas rationing is actually occuring, go ahead and post it (them).
Hi Cindy: Unfortunately the rumors and the media will create panic and send people out in a mad rush to fill their tanks. That will create the shortage. Feeling really down today.... like more bad stuff is coming our way. Can't even watch the pictures coming on TV anymore.
Alright, that's enough searching for me.
Many news articles are using phrases "gas prices soaring," "fear of gas rationing," and others are documenting the history of "gas rationing."
Anyway, AD, fyi.
End of searching that topic for now.
bookmark
OPINION: You're right about the "the rumors and the media will create panic" and that is why I am taking time from house cleaning (any excuse will do -- smiling) to reasearch AD's post regarding gas rationing.
We have a lot of readers here, some people who will always be lurkers, wondering what the real story is about ____ (fill in the blank).
FReepers will always try to get the real facts and the real story to the best of our abilities.
Try not to feel down, freeperfromnj.
Everyday is a gift from God.
Live it to the fullest.
Thanks. It's really hard to watch the suffering in the south. Of course, you're right - every day truly is a gift. Think I'll stop reading the hurricane threads for a while and get back to terror sleuthing (smiling).

Iraq: About 650 die in stampede spurred by rumors of bomber
Terrorism creates more terror. Now, here's an assignment for all you moral equivalence advocates. Please compile a list similar to the one below of similar bombings and other attacks taking place in and around churches since 1980. The shootings by Muslims in Pakistani churches, as well as the destruction of churches by Muslims in Indonesia and Nigeria, don't count: this must be Christian-on-Christian violence. Send your lists to director@jihadwatch.org.
From AP, with thanks to Bob:
BAGHDAD (AP) At least 648 people were killed in a stampede on a bridge Wednesday when panic engulfed a Shiite religious procession amid rumors that a suicide bomber was about to attack, officials said. It appeared to be the single biggest loss of life in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion. Scores jumped or were pushed to their deaths into the Tigris River, while others were crushed in the crowd. Most of the dead were women and children, Interior Ministry spokesman Lt. Col. Adnan Abdul-Rahman said.
Deadly incidents in Islam
Wednesday's stampede is far from the first fatal accident to befall Islamic religious ceremonies:
Aug. 31, 2005: At least 648 Shiite worshippers taking part in annual commemoration of a saint's death are killed in a stampede on a bridge in Baghdad, with many trampled or tumbling into the Tigris River.
March 10, 2005: A suicide bomber blows himself up at a Shiite mosque during a funeral in the northern city of Mosul, killing at least 47 people and wounding more than 100.
Dec. 19, 2004: Car bombs tore through a Najaf funeral procession and Karbala's main bus station, killing at least 60 people and wounding more than 120 in the two Shiite holy cities.
March 2, 2004: Coordinated blasts from suicide bombers, mortars and planted explosives strike Shiite Muslim shrines in Karbala and in Baghdad, killing at least 181 and wounding 573.
Feb. 1 2004: 251 Muslim pilgrims killed in stampede in Saudi Arabian city of Mina during the stoning ritual at the annual Muslim pilgrimage.
Aug. 29, 2003: A car bomb explodes outside mosque in Najaf, killing more than 85 people, including Shiite leader Ayatollah Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim. Although officials never gave a final death toll, there were suspicions it may have been higher.
July 4, 2003: Gunmen in the Pakistani city of Quetta storm a Shiite Muslim mosque packed with prayer worshippers, killing about 50 and wounding hundreds.
March 5, 2001: 35 hajj pilgrims killed in stampede during stoning of the devil ritual in Mina.
April 9, 1998: Some 180 pilgrims trampled to death when panic erupted after several fell off an overpass during the stoning of the devil ritual in Mina....
May 23, 1994: 270 pilgrims killed in a stampede in Saudi Arabia's holiest city, Mecca, as worshippers surged toward a cavern for the symbolic ritual of "stoning the devil."
July 9, 1990: 1,426 pilgrims killed in a stampede in an overcrowded pedestrian tunnel leading to holy sites in Mecca. It is the worst hajj-related tragedy.
July 31, 1987: 402 people, mostly Iranian pilgrims, killed and 649 wounded in the Saudi city of Mecca when security forces clash with Iranians staging an anti-U.S. demonstration.

Smiling back at you.
The suffering hurts my heart, too.
What helps me is prayer and doing something.
So, since I'm not one of the those volunteers with builder skills I am:
*Praying.
*Monitoring The Salvation Army web site.
*We contacted a church in Alabama.
They are going to advise us as to what we can do for them.
*Monitoring the news and posting updates.
Well, that's my Do List.
Other friends are:
*Praying.
*Giving to the Salvation Army.
*Contacting people and organizations to see what they
need.
*Emailing friends with info and support.
Where are the food and water drops? I've seen better that we've done for people in foreign countries than for our own.
It's horrific law enforcement is being forced to converge on people in groups for their own safety. Those impeding law officers should be removed from the area by the most expedient method. If you can't protect yourself in your own home, no one is going to do it for you under catastrophic circumstances. Guns and bullets shouldn't only be for those breaking the law with them. Self preservation demands us to be prepared for the worst.
It may seem surreal in NO, but given there are thousands without homes and food, what would happen if several cities were nuked and the homeless and foodless were multiplied accordingly. The scenario is not so far fetched and those of us who have even a 30 day supply of food and water could potentially be endangered if this information was to be known under those circumstances. Boy scout motto X3: Be Prepared!
