Dog Rips Child From Mother Arms
GLENDALE A Rottweiller ripped a toddler out of her mother's arms in Glendale, dragged the child up a driveway and mauled her to death, police said today.
The dog, which belongs to the victim's grandparents, pulled the child from her mother's arms about 7 last night in the 2300 block of Via Saldivar, said Sherri Servillo, a Glendale Police Department spokeswoman.
The infant was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Servillo said.
The woman was housesitting for the child's grandparents, Servillo said, adding authorities received a "hysterical 911 call" after the attack.
The dog is being held by Pasadena Animal Control, she said.
The woman holding the child was also holding a hose and watering a lawn when the 150-pound Rottweiler attacked, said Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz, calling it a "horrific and tragic incident" that has shocked crime scene investigators.
He said the dog dragged the infant several feet down the driveway before mauling her. The mother suffered no major injuries.
After being notified of the attack, Glendale police officers went to the place where the victim's father works in Pasadena and drove him to the hospital where his child was pronounced dead, police said.
Yeah, and Hitler got the trains running on time. Doesn't justify either existence.
The only difference between a dangerous dog owner and Charles Manson is a matter of timing and chance.
Please understand, I am an animal lover. Truly. I love dogs, cats, just about any animal. More than people sometimes :) but I still believe some breeds of dog are more prone to snap and attack. Not for no reason, but perhaps because of an instinctual reason that may be "hardwired" into their very being.
I mentioned bullsharks in my other post. Vicious, nasty creatures, but I would not eradicate them. And it is possible to swim with them without anything happening. But, by it's nature, it can turn on you and attack (more likely with a bullshark because of it's high level of aggressive hormones). And when bullsharks attack, it's not uncommon that they don't just bite and leave like most sharks, they go for the kill. I tend to think some dog breeds are the same. I don't think they should be eradicated, but I do not turn a blind eye to the fact that some breeds are more apt to be vicious by nature.
I assume that your comment was meant to be sarcastic but you are more right than you know. Rotties were bred to (among other things) bait bulls and drive cattle to market. Breeds were developed for specific reasons(jobs). Any breed of dog that is 'working' at the job it is bred for or something close to it is much happier and has a more stable temperment than a bored neglected dog (yes I think many spoiled pampered pets are neglected if the owners do not provide them with meaningful(to the dog) 'work')
"Funny that my friend has had 3 and never had one incident with any of them."
Obviously your friend didn't train them to be savage killers. The people that take these dogs and turn them into weapons make me sick.
Exterminated is one thing, outlawed for zoned residential districts is another(like other things are).. same with pit bulls.. But that would bring government into it..
Jailing the owner instead of offing the dog in these events would have more effect.. but that would be gov't intervention too.. HMMM maybe someone needs to invent a poisoned doggy treat launcher.. that way you could launch de-doggy missles at the dogs back yard.. also would work for noisy pooches.. but damn that would make Beagles a hard breed to keep...
Nevermind
Travis, you're babbling. He might have been the alpha. Heck - he probably was. There are tons of people not in charge of their households when it comes to dogs.
Dogs don't consider people to be the leader - they respect the leader because the leader commands respect. No way any dog would assume that a baby was a new top dog.
The hierarchy of the pack is not a new discovery. Gillman has it right.
Oh, okay.
I just more folks would understand that it's not the breed; it's the owner!!
Semper Fi,
Kelly
They use them as guard dogs for their house and family and WANT them to be vicious.
People often make a big mistake trusting dogs that "look friendly" or are a supposedly "gentle breed".
An animal is an animal and one cannot always be sure of their behavior unless they are well trained.
My collie wass the sweetest dog ever, but she, like any dog, was capable of snapping or biting.
Often when folks say "I didn't do anything, I don't why the dog did that", that only means they didn't see or hear what the dog saw/heard.
ROFL you would if you could reach too ;-)
(disclaimer: this is a joke on an otherwise contentious thread)
That's true, but it's also poor training. I know I wouldn't want a guard dog to be a mindless killing machine. Personally, I think that's why German Shepards make the best guard dogs. They're a very bright breed and can learn the difference between Aunt Tillie and a rapist. Still, it comes down to training.
R:TW is great. I use the War Dogs either at the onset of an attack or to chase down the fleeing enemy. Incindiary pigs on the other hand... ugh... lame.
Travis, you and I could argue all day, especially when the subject continues to shift away from it's point of origin. However, I do not have all day to argue, nor do I have the desire. Time to move on, wouldn't you agree?
" There are two kinds of Rottweiler/Pit Bull owners - child murderes and future child murderers."
Meet me at DM airbase in Tucson and I will do my best to introduce you to K9 personnel with Rottweilers so you can call them "Future Baby Killers" in person.
Added to the owners being gone, and a "new owner" in the house, and you have a recipe for disaster.
I could be wrong. However, it can take multiple gunshot wounds to kill people as well. With smashing the windpipe, I wasn't think of a fist per se, but of a grab and twist. It's a little hard to explain.... this comes from my stepdad who has raised many GSDs, and who has never had a problem being recognized as the alpha by nearly any dog he's met. As he explains, with his own dogs - every day he shows them who's alpha. I don't think fists are effective on dogs that are hell-bent on a fight. However, knowledge of weak spots is key.
But that will not be the point the DA is making in court, if you own a breed with a bad reputation (fairly deserved or not) and it mauls someone.
Then, the jury will be hearing all about "killer breeds," and your irresponsibility in owning a "killer dog."
I may not like it, but that's reality.
I don't have a problem with professionals who need these dogs for security reasons.
