Soros-Backed Activist Group Disbands as Interest Fades
Washington Post ^ | Wednesday, August 3, 2005 | Thomas B. Edsall

A year ago, the liberal group America Coming Together was on the cutting edge of national politics, spending tens of millions of dollars on a massive voter-mobilization project in every presidential battleground state.

The dream was that ACT -- heavily funded by billionaire George Soros -- would play a decisive role in getting Democratic nominee John F. Kerry elected president and then remain in business as a permanent force in liberal politics.

Steve Rosenthal, who launched America Coming Together to mobilize voters for Democrat John F. Kerry, said maintaining momentum after the election proved to be harder than expected. Billionaire George Soros's heavy funding of the group ended after the election. Steve Rosenthal, who launched America Coming Together to mobilize voters for Democrat John F. Instead, the group this week began sending e-mails to most of the 28 people who make up the remaining ACT staff warning that their paychecks would stop at the end of August. All the state offices have been, or are soon to be, closed.

Let's not be complacent about any race at all.

You are right. I suspect they have decided that stealing elections is easier than winning them.

"Billionaire George Soros's heavy funding of the group ended after the election."

No surprise. Am I correct in thinking that he personally spent $25 million of his own money on the 2004 election trying to get Kerry elected? Hey, even for a billionaire, $25 mill is a chunk of change to thow away on a lost cause.

I'll try to send him a check to help him out, right after I make my final payment to the Bill Clinton Legal Defense Fund.

Soros and his close associate -- Progressive Corp. Chairman Peter Lewis -- together put $38.5 million into ACT and the Media Fund. With this seed money, the two organizations collected $196.4 million, enough to set up voter mobilization programs in every presidential battleground state and to flood the airwaves with pro-Democratic commercials in the early spring of 2004 when Kerry's campaign was broke.

Such a shame. 28 newly unemployed people. Will the MSM be reporting this as an uptick in the unemployment rate for the week?

Good post.

Interesting that the liberals can't get national traction.

BWAHAHAHA! Maybe they can steal some funds from the inner-city kids programs like Air America did to keep the doors open.

Valerie Plame Wilson donated money to ACT and to VP Gore. Considering that she's in hot water over her CIA shenanigans, it's not a stretch to wonder if ACT is shutting down so that records can be shredded prior to the conclusion of Fitzgerald's grand jury.

FReepers need to file an amicus brief requesting a court order against ACT to stay any destruction of documents related to Plame and her husband Joe Wilson.

There isn't much of a market for liberalism. Its not like they can sell NOTHING, which is what the Left has been doing since the election. Good riddance!

What about all of those ads I keep hearing on Rush talking about how the evil "Catholic" John Roberts is going to ruin the country? ;-)

I was wondering what the point of those ads are. Supreme Court nominee John Roberts is Catholic, the Pope is Catholic, and the Pope is from Germany (with emphasis). So, what? Is the ominous tone supposed to carry subliminal messages?

If it weren't for the identical voice, style, and ending line (paid for by Soros and friends of Nancy Pelosi) to ads about Karl Rove (emphasizing that he spells his name with a "K") a few weeks ago also on Rush's program breaks, I would have again thought it was some sort of humorous parody to make fun of the left.

FReepers need to file an amicus brief requesting a court order against ACT to stay any destruction of documents related to Plame and her husband Joe Wilson.

Plame's been getting lots of bad publicity about the falsified FEC form she filed when she attended ACT's Bruce Springsteen concert held for Kerry.

Plame claimed she was "retired"----hiding her employment with the CIA could be construed as attempting to hide her partisanship or her employement with the CIA.

RECAP of Plame's violations:

(1) Falsified FEC form

(2) Violated the Hatch Act prohibiting politicking by federal employees (we don't know what else she did for Kerry---perhaps using her CIA status ---many times Kerry sounded coached

(3) Possibly falsified CIA reports concerning her ACT (or other) political activities

(4) Hid her employment with the CIA possibly at ACT's request

(5) Violated CIA rules and regs regarding politicking

(6) Hid partisan ACT activities to deceive the CIA.

The architect of ACT was Steve Rosenthal, who had won his spurs as political director of the AFL-CIO and by 2003 was determined to build a liberal voter-mobilization organization that would be independent of the Democratic Party, labor unions or other traditional interest groups.

People who involved in ACT were Labor Union leaders, Emily List founder, etc. So, what kind of 'independent' organization they're talking about?
