American Journalist Found Dead in Iraq
08/03 12:48a CDT BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP)
An American freelance journalist was found dead in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, the U.S. Embassy said Wednesday.
Police said Steven Vincent had been shot multiple times after he and his Iraqi translator were abducted at gunpoint hours earlier.
"I can confirm to you that officials in Basra have recovered the body of journalist Steven Vincent," said embassy spokesman Pete Mitchell. "The U.S. Embassy is working with British military and local Iraqi officials in Basra to determine who is responsible for the death of this journalist. Our condolences go out to the family."
Iraqi police in Basra said Vincent was abducted along with his female translator at gunpoint Tuesday evening. The translator, Nour Weidi, was seriously wounded.
Iraq is three cats in one tow sack...
I find your comment difficult to swallow given that I observed (from afar) 1/3 of Iraq risk their lives to vote and have their fingers marked a distinct shade of purple.
Defeating evil is not easy.
As I understand he just had a column on rouge police who are enforcing Islamic law area.
"Until now Basra has been relatively peaceful."
Still is. They are just getting rid of the enemy.
I'm sorry to hear this and join in prayers for his loved ones!
It took me a moment. "Rouge police" has many possibilities.
I've had his blog on my profile page for awhile now. When I saw the headline this morning, my stomach dropped.
This really sucks. He took the risks because he wanted the real story. He paid his own way, and kept going back to Iraq to cover it because he was too old for the military but felt, after watching the 9-11 attacks, he had to do something.
God bless him and his family.
Damn, I did it again. I have some sort of mental block with that word.

PROJECTING VALUES
Writer Steven Vincent has been murdered in Iraq.
Back on July 26, he blogged the following exchange:
The murdered reporter had written an article for the NYTimes saying that enemies had infiltrated the police force in Basra.
The female translator was shot four times.
Doesn't sound that way from Mr. Vincent's Blog http://spencepublishing.typepad.com/in_the_red_zone
I highly doubt he could afford any....he didn't have any in any event.
You just hope and pray you get published and your work will at least give you some food. I have a lot of respect for freelancers over in Iraq even if I don't like the politics of the person....it is hellish work.
But, this time we lost a good guy.
"My country was at war, and I wanted to participate in the conflict as a patriot, and as someone seeking a way to strike back against the terrorists. But when the United States invaded Afghanistan, I dithered, unsure of how to make the transition from art journalism to combat journalism. At the same time, though, I felt the pressure of events history was in the making, huge forces were locked in life and death issues that would change the course of the world. Who wouldnt want to be part of that?"
From an interview....this man felt going to Iraq and doing his war reporting there was a way of fighting back at the terrorists.
RIP, sir. We lost a great one.

***Prayers for the good American who "wanted the real story." Condolences for his family and friends, and admirers who suffer his loss. Prayers for the all of us who want the "real story."

There has been suggestions that Vincent's death is related to his writing connecting Basra police with terror attacks.
