Air France Aircraft on Fire at Pearson Airport (Toronto) (Update: Minor injuries)

Breaking News from CFRB 1010AM News Radio - Toronto

Airliner on fire on the ground at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Unclear as to cause. Announcers asking for updates from motorists in the region on HWY 401. Report says great deal of smoke. I have to go into a meeting shortly but I'll listen for updates as long as I can.

Actually, I was pulling some info from the Air Transport World yearly World Airline Report that I have on my desk. Go back a few years and read the magazine, I was interviewed for an article in it. It was pretty cool.

It stopped about 100 meters or so short of the ravine proper or the outcome would have been much more dire. It's in more of a shallow ditch that separates the runway and the artificial berm visually shielding it from Highway 401.

Do you people not realize that 9-11 itself would not have been acknowledged unless it was ablsolutely 100% obvious? If there had been just the one plane, don't you udnerstand that the government would have said it was 'pilot error' or a 'suicidal pilot'.

Because if it is really true that after that landing that everybody got off the plane alive, including the injured, before the plane blew up it's got to mean that the French Flight Attendants were doing something very right and very brave.

It was at Teterboro,NJ after the CO crash. Challenger was reported to be grossly out of balance with the CG too far aft and it didn't lift off properly and crew aborted takeoff(obviously too too late) and it skidded across Rt 46 and nose first into a building.

Well hopefully since they were at somewhat of an incline in that ditch the jump wasn't as bad as it could be. If the plane is on fire I'm jumping.

On MSNBC Ed Pinto former FAA official said that if they had a wider area around and at the end of the runway (more than 600 feet) this would have just been an embarrassing incident rather than a major one.

Reminds me somewhat of the Southwest plane that ran through the fence at Burbank airport in Califonria and almost went into a gas station. Ended without injuries IIRC.

As for the crash, how can anyone possibly begin to comprehend how one would feel to be on that plane and be able to talk about it afterward?
