Well hopefully since they were at somewhat of an incline in that ditch the jump wasn't as bad as it could be. If the plane is on fire I'm jumping.
On MSNBC Ed Pinto former FAA official said that if they had a wider area around and at the end of the runway (more than 600 feet) this would have just been an embarrassing incident rather than a major one.
Reminds me somewhat of the Southwest plane that ran through the fence at Burbank airport in Califonria and almost went into a gas station. Ended without injuries IIRC.

Ended without major injuries you mean....
that gas station has since been closed down...the investigation into who approved a gas station at the end of a runway proved futile, as the zoning permits were all missing at city hall.

Gen. Mitchell International in Milwaukee (KMKE) doesn't have more than 500 feet between either end of Runway 1L/19R and major roadways, and the southern roadway is in a rather deep trench.
