Breaking News from CFRB 1010AM News Radio - Toronto

Airliner on fire on the ground at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Unclear as to cause. Announcers asking for updates from motorists in the region on HWY 401. Report says great deal of smoke. I have to go into a meeting shortly but I'll listen for updates as long as I can.

I have never liked flying on Airbus planes.

The wings shudder so much that I'm afraid metal fatigue will make them fall off..

You have to watch Airport and Airport '75 to know anything about airplane crashes.

I watched both Airplane! movies, does that count?

Eyewitness on CNN right now claims he was on the plane, and the 2nd off, and says people were running off the plane. He thinks many got off, but does not know how many. He was at the rear of the aircraft.

I hate flying. I know all the safety statistics, but I find it terrifying nonetheless.

And, yes, I've had two scares on commercial flights more than 15 years ago - one on Delta, one on US Air. Both incidents were weather-related.

CBC has an interview with a passenger. He said the plane was totally full.

Amazing that this man is able to talk on the phone. It surely is a miracle if no one died.

CNN has CBC interview of a passenger "Roel Bramar" claiming to be the 2nd person off the plane. Thinks that most got off the plane, but not sure. Plane was full. Lights went off just as they landed, but don't know if there was a lightning strike.

"Prayers for the passengers."

Yes, and for their families, who may be watching this on television knowing that their loved ones may be trapped onboard.

The first airplane fatality in history occurred in 1908 when Lt. Thomas Selfridge was killed in this plane piloted by Orville Wright.  The accident was caused by propeller separation.  Orville Wright suffered broken ribs, pelvis and a leg. (September 17, 1908)

It's remarkable no one was killed.

CTV, witness saying the pilot said their landing was being delayed because of weather....they were in the ravine...the plane stopped, we opened the emergency door.....just tried to escape the plane....there was a lot of panic, a lot of smoke. "I don't know if everybody managed to get out of the plane, we were running like crazy."

Airbus and wind shear seem to go together. Fortunately, it appears everyone survived. I was in Japan during the Nagoya crash when only a small child survived. The Japanese airlines overwhelmingly buy Boeing, even for short-haul flights like Tokyo-Osaka.

I don't think I'm ever flying again if there's a cloud in the western hemisphere.

It may be wild speculation, but I would say this was weather related.

Not wild speculation at all, I'd say that it is extremely likely weather was the primary cause.

The airplane on Lost is a scrapped Delta L1011.

Same kind of plane that crashed at DFW 20 years ago in similar conditions.
