Breaking News from CFRB 1010AM News Radio - Toronto
Airliner on fire on the ground at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Unclear as to cause. Announcers asking for updates from motorists in the region on HWY 401. Report says great deal of smoke. I have to go into a meeting shortly but I'll listen for updates as long as I can.

Could have been a downburst then; I believe we had 3+ crashes related to them in the US about 20 years ago, led to a lot of changes and there have been none since. Exactly 20 years ago in fact. See #98. Wonder if Canada dealt with microbursts at the same time we did.

I heard the same detail from MSNBC at the same time.
In a situation like that, minutes after crash, the facts are a muddle.

ABC radio news said there MAY be some survivors. What ever that means.

Yea! Amazing!
Still listening to CFRB.
Previous post says heard everyone got off. Injuries only. Incredible!!!

Yeah, it should have crashed short of the runway if it was a typical downburst.
Maybe there was simply an enormous amount of water on the runway?

42 km/h = 26 mph. There were local reports up to 100 km/h (65 mph) wind gusts in a few isolated areas.
I sure hope that those reports are true! Especially considering what could have been if it crashed onto the 401...

WBBM radio in Chicago had a man whose daughter was on the flight. She said she and others escaped the plane and huddled under a bridge over the ravine for safety. She called him from her cell phone.
